They're telling you your hardward doesn't play nice with their hardware. A few suggestions:
Update your printer, and see if any improvement is found: http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=123&modelid=13371#DownloadDetailAct
If that doesn't work, see if your computer has a fax modem that itself can be updated and can support the hardware. Your multifunction printer has a scanner; you can scan in the things you want to fax, then fax from the computer if the computer can fax. This is starting to look like a Dr. Seuss book.
You can also try to learn more about what the problems are and look elsewhere. Your "digital" phone is actually voice over Internet, something VOIP. If you Google for VOIP FAX you'll find some information, like this: http://www.3cx.com/PBX/FAX-VOIP.html
I am having a similar problem. You do have to connect your phone to the jack in the machine in the "Phone" jack slot, as well as have another line out to the jack in the wall in the "L" slot. That is all I know. I am having problems with my voicemail. Either I can received voicemail, and no faxes, or faxes, and no voicemail (fax picks up at specified number of rings). It is EXTREMELY frustrating. The machine is *supposed* to be able to discern between phone calls and faxes..and that is not happening.
MY BROTHER HAS A CANNON MP530 AND ALL OF A SUDDEN HE CAN'T SEND OR RECEIVE FAXES. I HAVE BEEN TRYING EVERYTHING THAT I KNOW TO DO AND CAN'T SOLVE THIS PROBLEM AND I USUALLY CAN. IF ANYONE CAN HELP ME HERE I WOULD TRUELY APPRECIATE IT. HE HAS MY ALL IN ON AND I AM TRYING TO GET HIS UP AND RUNNING AGAIN
