Question about Dyson DC08 Cylinder Bagless Canister Cyclonic Vacuum

Dyson DC08 power failure

Hi Guys,

My Dyson DC08 fell down the stairs (it's supposed to be designed to sit on...) and immediately stopped working. Will no longer power on. 'On' button seems OK - i.e. makes the click sound when pushed - but machine doesn't start. Have an expensive call out booked for Dec 24th but if anyone can suggest anything before then that would be great. We tried taking it apart but looks like it needs a pretty specialist screwdriver to get in there!

Hi there Michelle, it's Jack at Dyson.

From the serial number you've provided, your Dyson vacuum is a DC08 T Allergy cylinder. You can find support for this model on our website:

Please note, spares and accessories for DC08 T will differ to the spares and accessories for the standard DC08 model. Floor tools, accessories and other parts for DC08 will not fit DC08 T, and vice versa.

If you'd like further help with your machine you're welcome to give the Dyson UK Helpline a call on 0800 298 0298. We're available from 8am-8pm from Monday to Friday, and 8am-6pm on weekends. Calls are free from UK landlines.

When you turn the power off on dc08,as the motor slows down you get a pop sound

Hi there, it's Jack at Dyson.

If your DC08 is making an unusual noise when you turn it off, this could be the suction relief valve changing position. If the relief valve is activating during use there may be a blockage somewhere in your machine, and the filter may also need a wash.

To check for blockages, please follow the steps shown in our online Support guide:

In normal use we recommend washing both parts of the pre-filter at least once every 3-6 months, using cold water without detergent. Allow at least 24 hours for both parts of the filter to dry completely before replacing them in the machine.

This should help, but if you continue to have difficulty after giving these steps a try, please contact our experts directly on 0800 298 0298.

Can i reverse suction on DC08

Hi there,

Your DC08 is not designed to be used as a compressed-air blower, and we'd advise against attempting to use it for this purpose as it may cause damage to the machine.

If this is not what you meant, please email me with further details at, as I may be able to help.

Alternatively, if you'd prefer to speak to one of our advisors in person, please call our Helpline on 0800 298 0298 (UK), or 1-866-693-9766 (US).

You have to tap the switch a couple of times before you can get it to stay on.

Hi there, This is a really common ailment of the Dyson DC08. The switch is failing due to a build up of dust in the cavity where the motor and switch sit. You will need to buy a new switch to fix the immediate problem and also a filter kit to keep it lasting longer. is the best Australian supplier for vacuum cleaner parts. I have uploaded a youtube video of how to change the motor. You can watch that video to see how to change the switch too since they are right next to each other. If this is a helpful solution please take a moment to rate my answer.

Dyson dc08 motor made rumbling sound and stopped

Hi there SmartAlec from here. Almost certainly it is the motor gone :(. Take off the lid that is under your bin and look at the filter underneath, if it has a black underside and a kind of burnt smell you will need to put a new motor in. If you happen to live in Australia you can get a motor from here is a link to the correct page. Hope this helps.
