Re: Won't powwer up

From what you're describing it could be one of several things so this thread may take a bit as you check some things and report back... In doing so, don't rate this till we've had a chance to look at a few things then you can call me a idiot with a poor rating...
First off lets change a couple of simple caps. C931 is 100uf/160v and is a common failure in these units. Also C933 which is a 1000uf/16v in fairly close proximity to each other. This cap also, by itself, can cause this symptom.
Try these and let me know what the result is.. I am assuming of course that you know what a cap is, how to solder and some of the basics to do this repair for yourself, correct?

My Sony Trinitron TV 1999 (KV-32V42) made a strange popping sound and I lost both the sound & picture. When I turn it back on, the two red lights on the front of the TV(standby/Timer light & Stereo...

The Standby/Power light of the TV blinks when there is any internal malfunction in the TV. The self-diagnostic function of the TV will cause the STANDBY light to blink or flash when the television detects an issue. The number of times the STANDBY light flashes corresponds to a specific issue.

Few examples are given below; some of the issues may be resolved without the need for service.
1 blink / 2 blinks / 5 blinks: - This indicates that there may be a power-related problem with your set.
3 blinks: - This indicates that there may be a power-related problem with your set. The set will need to be serviced to allow a technician to determine the specific issue that needs to be repaired. If the power light flashes three times in sequence in a Lamp TV, the lamp cover is not securely attached. Reattach the lamp cover to resolve this issue.
4 blinks: - This indicates that there may be a back light or lamp power problem.
6 blinks: - This indicates that there is some kind of audio problem with your set.
7 blinks: - This indicates that there is a temperature problem with your set. Please check to make sure that the air vents on the sides and back of the set are not blocked or clogged and there is adequate ventilation around the television. We recommend that you check and clean the vents periodically to make sure the set receives adequate air flow. If the problem continues, the set will need to be serviced.
8 blinks: - This indicates that there may be a video-related problem with your set. If the flash sequence is not listed above or the light continues to flash, follow the steps below to perform a power reset:
Try the following steps to check if the issue can be resolved.
Turn off the television.
Unplug the television power cord from the electrical outlet.
Let the television remain without power for 60 seconds.
Plug the power cord back into the electrical outlet.

If the television is plugged into a power strip or surge protector, remove it from the power strip or surge protector and plug it directly into the wall outlet. If the issue is resolved, the problem is with the power strip or surge protector and not the television.

If the issue continues to occur, service may be required.

No Picture-No Sound Timer light flashes.

The sequence of flashes from the timer light may hold the clue as to what is wrong. For instance if it blinks 5 times then 3 before repeating the cycle, it usually means that IC 702 on the CRT drive board is bad. I have had to replace that semiconductor many times in the past. For this exact symptom, removing the connector Cn706 From the CRT Drive Board allows the set to start up. I am very skeptical of the quality of picture tubes in these sets, so if this is the problem, it may occur again. When replacing this IC, there could be damage to a resistor and capacitor R533 and C541 on the main Printed Circuit Board also. If your timer light is not flashing that code, the problem is elsewhere. If the set is over 6 years old, it may be worthwhile replacing it.
