WD 400gb mybook internal connectors?

Hi, I recently purchased a wd 400gb mybook from eBay, with the external casing removed. The person claimed he cracked the case, and took it off and was going to put another on but didnt have time so he sold it off cheap. I figured it was a steal at $50, and got it. It works and all, but I am trying to figure out what the connectors on the board are so I can make my own enclosure for it. One is a two pin connector that looks like either a jumper cap goes on it, a push button switch, or led light connects to it, and is labeled 'J10'. The other is longways down against the board on the edge, looks like the female end that pins stick into, 5 holes across and 2 high, and is labeled 'J2'.

If anyone has ripped apart a mybook and has an idea, I'd like to know before I stick a power switch on a led connector and blow something up! :)

ps - I think its the essential edition one, as it only has usb and no firewire.

Thanks,

- Dave

Oh sorry, of course! HDD is WD4000KS (sata), and on the board it says
    WESTERN DIGITAL
    BRIDGE CONTROLLER 1U
    SINGLE SATA-USB 2.0

    and towards the bottom:

    2061-701411-000
    REV A
    COPYRIGHT 2005

I don't care as much tho now, because i had just throw it into a small cardboard box i had leftover from shipping and recieving things on ebay, and of course that was a bad idea, i knew it would get hot but not THAT hot! (enough to kill it). A few months ago it started clicking and was dead. It was either the heat, pre-faulty anyways, or who knows. most likely the heat tho. I could get it to work about 5 min after cooling down but thats about it. After letting it sit a few more months now it wont even work at all just clicks twice after spinup then dies. Oh well.

I could still use the info on connectors tho to hook another drive to it and not use a cardboard box this time =]

Hi,

It seems that your Harddrive has problems with internal Micro USB connector. WD, Transcend and Seagate brands are having such kind of problems.

Try to adjust the micro usb cable in such a way that your data transfer or ongoing activity will not hamper. Else to have perfect solution on your problem, backup complete data from the HDD and hand-over the HDD to the nearest WD technical department.

They may diagnose the issue and if not resolvable, will handover new WD Harddrive.

Thanks,
Amar

Tip

The computer does not see MyBook anymore

Try a replacement USB cable first, and test the MyBook on a different computer, to ensure the fault is on the external storage unit.

There are two possibilities:

The Mybook USB/ATA controller board is faulty.
In this case you can simply take apart the enclosure and mount the disk into a new enclosure. WD Mybooks are SATA, but double check the hard disk connector to ensure.

The hard disk inside is faulty.
In this case repair may be expensive. You need to locate a data recovery facility with a 'clean room' , the cost is usually more than $800.

If this happened after a power surge, then the problem is most likely a faulty controller board.

If instead you have dropped the hard disk it is possible an hard drive failure, in that case repair will be expensive.

A replacement enclosure will stfrom art about $20 on Ebay or Amazon, and must not necessarily be WD .
Check if your disk is Sata or PATA (IDE) before buying the enclosure.

There is an i/o error on some images and music files, on WD passport external hdd

The disk-drive inside the case is "dying".
Try to copy all the files that you can, before it's completely "dead".

Then, if the drive is still under warranty, exercise the warranty to get a free replacement.

If not under warranty, WD has a "customer loyalty" program -- take the serial-number, and buy a new Passport from WD's web-site, citing the serial-number, to get a big discount on the purchase.

Unfortunately if there is no driver for Vista, then your out of luck. Since Vista is a widely used OS and getting bigger, then the MyBook manufactures must create a Vista driver soon or they will be in danger of going out of business. Just wait and periodically check the MyBook website for new drivers.
