According to Pivotrim, it will fit your trimmer, BUT... I can see your dilemma here. Here is a link to the installation tips page for your type of trimmer: http://www.pivotrimhelp.com/Installation/Default.aspx It is recommended for your model to use "Installation Method 3", here is the instructional video: Now, It does look like the threaded, exposed end is a bit short. From personal experience with this model of trimmer, I found that the entire shaft would slip out overtime form the motor housing. With an allan key, you can loosen the joint where the shaft meets the motor housing near the throttle control. When loosened ensure that the shaft is as far up as it can go, then tighten again.
The long bolt coming down at the end shaft like place reel over bolt then turn back and forth slowly while pushing upward and it should lock in and take knob or bolt at end and tighten to the right.

I need to replace the gas filter in a featherlite weedeater 18cc. it rotted off and I dont know what line it goes on? is the other gas line a return gas line?
Make sure your gas supply is fresh...not from last year... Secondly, clean and service the air filter element... you may need to reoil it before installation...check your manual. Disconnect the fuel line and drain it and what little is in the carb...push on the prime bulb if it's got one... Then with a clean air filter and fresh gas... give it a start and after start, disengage the choke.. Let me know how you do.. K
