File Sharing could be easily done between your laptop & desktop assuming both are running some Windows version with no other program needed to install. You have to right click on the filename/folder and enable sharing. Of course both computers must belong to the same network group for easy access.

Should you need additional information, pls post back your Windows version.

Good luck and kind regards.

Can't acess laptop computer but can see on desktop

To allow access between both the laptop and desktop the hard drives or folders on both computers must be made shareable.
Right click on the C drive or folders or other hard drive then click on Sharing and Security - Sharing. Then in Network Sharing and security - tick Share this folder on the network and enter a share name that identifies this computer and drive/folder.

How do I set up the Linksys 54G router so that I can access my wired desktop from my wireless laptop and visa versa? Thanks. Fred

Are you asking about sharing files between the 2 systems? if so, no action is required on the router. you need to setup both computers to share files. see this link:

There is another option. has a program that actually lets you view the desktop of the other system. This works anywhere in the world. Allows you to share files. And best of all, it's free for personal use.

Either option works, but you do not need to change anything on your router.

Shared folder no long accesible xp and vista

Assuming that you have created a shard folder before, "Sharing Files and Folders" should be enabled on your machine.

Go to your Control Panel -> Folder Options adn click the "View" tab. Scroll all the way down and disable "Use simple file sharing (Recommended)".
Now the "Sharing and Security" option should appear again if you right-click a folder.

Microsoft has a write-up on this for general information. See here.

In regards to the possible Trojan - I would need the exact file name to find more information. What you can do from your end is to run an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner.

Note: You should use Internet Explorer to run this scan, and you must disable your Anti Virus program during the scan.
Click the Accept button.
You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
* The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
* Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
* Now click on Scan Settings
* In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
o Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
o Scan Options:
Scan Archives
Scan Mail Bases
* Click OK
* Now under select a target to scan:
Select My Computer
* This will program will start and scan your system.
* The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
* Once the scan is complete it will display the results if your system has been infected.
o Now click on the View scan report link:
* Click the Save report as button
* Under Save as type, choose Text file (*.txt)
* Save the file to your desktop as Kaspersky.txt
* Copy and paste that information in your next post if you like.

If you have any more questions, or file sharing is still not working, just come back here and leave a comment - I'm happy to help.

Adding Dell Dimension 4600 to existing wireless network?...

Go to Staples and purchase a Linksys USB wireless-G (only G needed - the new "N" protocol is overkill) adapter (~$60.00). Insert the Linksys CD and follow the instructions. When prompted, plug the USB adapter into the Dell (frt or back) doesn't matter. If his "roomies" have security enabled on their router, you'll need to know the level, password/passphrase, and the network name that they assigned.
Good luck.

Desktop won't connect with printer connected to laptop

Make sure both computers can share files and can ping each other, if not, it's just a firewall issue. Try to disable your firewall first.

D-link DI-524 wireless - lan network connection

Yep. Vista sucks :-)

In the vista machine, you have to turn on a whole bunch of options. Right click Network, hilghlight properties and left click and it opens up Network and Sharing Center. Down at the bottom, you have a list of options. Start by turning on the options you need: File Sharing, Public File sharing, Printer Sharing etc. I'm pretty sure it's already done in the XP machine, but if not, check there too.

It should start to show network files between machines.

Trying to network xp pc to wireless laptop

Right click on the drive you want to share. Ex: C:\Vol-xx = name. In the pop up window click Sharing & Security. This needs done to all the drives you want access too. To share a printer. Everyone must have the printer drivers installed. The Pc that has a direct connection to the printer must also Share the printer on the network. Open Printer & Faxes, highlight the printer you want to share. Click File than click Sharing follow windows instructions.
Small suggestion regards to the wireless side of the network. Suggest you setup security so others close too you can not tap into your network. (common).

Help please....printer name does NOT appear

You must have a network set up, and you must enable file and printer sharing on the desktop. The laptop and the desktop should be in the same workgroup. Some firewalls will cause this problem.
Start with the network setup wizard in Settings/Network.
