Hi there, Before we start, try hooking your laptop up directly to the modem - if you're not getting an internet connection there, call your Internet Service Provider. If you are, then follow the steps below.
1) Make sure that you're not using more than one router at the same time. One router should be hooked up directly to your modem in the WAN port. If you have wireless security enabled, go to step 2 2) As a test, remove the security on your wireless network and then see if you can access the internet properly. The router can be accessed by typing it its address in internet explorer, as long as you are connected to the router. Generally the address is 3) If you still can't access the internet, go to Internet Explorer Options, the Connections tab, LAN settings, and make sure "use a proxy server" is NOT checked. 4) If you DO get an internet connection now, go back to your router and enable WPA security (some older laptops have problems with WPA2 connections).
If everything doesn't work, post back with some more details! Alex

I have a NetGear Wireless Router which wont connect to internet.

Verify that you can connect to the internet without the router by hooking the cable from the dsl modem to your computers NIC.

If you can connect to the internet that way the problem is with the router. press and hold the reset button on the back of the router to reset it to the factory settings. (this just makes it easy to determine the problem) if this corrects the problem you can setup your security again

Can you hook up the router without hooking to a tower

Yes the Router can be hooked to a high speed modem like DSL or Cable, that high speed connection would go from the modem to the "internet" port of the router. Now the router would need to be configured if you need wireless, and then a temporary connection to a tower or laptop would be needed.

PC works fine with Linksys USB card, but laptop's NetGear won't.

It looks like you are either using TKIP or AES just put the wireless to use MIXED and it will solve your problem.

Make sure that your computer is getting a valid IP address from the router. If your wireless network is secured, you might as well consider checking the wireless settings.
