My problem is a little different. Chain was loose and when door hit my bumper ( car not all way in... ) chain poped off drive gear on top of opener. I got chain back on but drive gear was in a different place on chain. Door would only go down about 2 feet from floor and would hit upper limit peg at top (the one on the rail near opener motor.) I fiddled with the Up/Down adjustment screws on the side until it would go all the way up and down but it is over sensitive when down, hitting bottom and going back up or stoping about 3" from bottom with only a touch of adjustment to adjusting screw.
Should I take chain off and try to get it back in the range it was in before and adjust screws back in the range they were?

Remove the outside cover. You will probably see the plastic gear inside is stripped. I purchased a replacement one from readingfarmsusa.com.

This just happened to me. I took off the cover and found the gear was stripped.

All garage door openers have a quick release. Have you checked to make sure that is locked in place? Most have a cord hangin from it and you pull it which releases it from the chain. Make sure that is engaged and it should work.

Have a Craftsman 1/2 HP Garage Door Opener, been working fine. Now when you start it you hear the motor running as normal but the chain doesnt move?

You must ensure the drive chain is engaged to the door puller.
Sometimes the emergency release if pulled (red cord) the drive and the coupling come separated.
Make sure the pin is back in place (pull release cord and make sure pin springs back in).
The run an open close cycle, it should pick up the drive again.

Motor hums but door doesn't move. If I disconnect door and give chain a horizontal poke, it will move. When I reconnect door it returns to humming, without movement.

Remove the cover from the motor unit and you will find the drive gear has stripped. White sawdust all over. The part number for the gear kit is 41A2817 and it comes with instructions. It is available at any good door opener service company.

Craftsmen garage door is not opening. It started

Your drive gear must be stripped. Remove the cover and you will most likely find lots of what looks like white sawdust and a stripped gear. It is white nylon and is just in front of the motor. The part number is 41A2817 if you want to replace it and it comes with instructions. Available at any good door opener service company.

I have a Sears Craftsman 1/2 horse garage door opener. When I push the button, I can hear it hum, but the chain won't move and it seems the sprocket is frozen?

If your door is stuck in the open position you will find the trolley is jammed against a bolt just in front of the motor unit. Remove that bolt and run the opener until the door closes. Now locate the 'up limit' control on the side of the motor unit and turn it 2 times in the opposite direction of the arrow printed on the cover. Replace the bolt.

Garage Door opened but will not close. I opened

I think the trolley has jammed against the bolt just in front of the motor unit. Remove the bolt and then run the door until it is closed. With the door closed locate the 'up limit' control on the side of the motor unit. Turn this 2 turns in the opposite direction of the arrow printed on the cover. Replace the bolt.

Craftsman opener motor works, but chain does not move.

If the motor is working but the chain does not move you must remove the cover on the motor and check to see that the chain is on the sprocket. If the chain is on the sprocket and the sprocket is not moving but the motor shaft is moving then the sprocket must be retightened onto the motor shaft.

Garage door opener motor runs, but the chain drive doesnt turn

If the chain is not moving and the motor is – you need a gear kit.

Unplug the unit - take of the cover – you will find white shavings inside – these confirm the diagnosis. .

Get the gear AND sprocket kit.

It’s a good DIY project but you MUST VERY CAREFULLY Follow the instructions step by step.

HOPE THIS HELPS

Craftsman Garage Door Opener Won't Open

When mine did this, it was because the nylon gears that drive the chain had stripped. My wife had to live without the opener for a week or more, but I was able to find a new gear kit online and replace the damaged gears. It wasn't difficult.
The other option is to buy a new opener.
