My Xbox has for some time been rotating through three problems. It will not open the disc tray, freeze mid play, (sometimes with the picture kinda digitally mixed) or just tell me a brand new disc is not recognizable. I take great care of my dvds and my unit is clean and free of dust.. Possible solutions since Xbox is wanting to charge me $95 to fix.

Re: Common Problem or Bad merchandise?
This could be something as simple as not enough room on the hard drive from old game saves. I have seen systems lock up when they run out of room on the hard drive just like a computer will.
This would be the first thing I did to see if I could alleviate the issue. Get into the Xbox without any game in the drive, then find the games saves manager and start cleaning up old saves that you don't need and see if this helps any.
A 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.

The XBox 360 is a wonderful video game console, however, with heavy usage, the laser (and/or other components in the drive) will eventually burn out.
The first signs of the laser starting to burn out is that your game will start freezing during game play. Eventually the games will stop reading altogether and you will get an "OPEN TRAY" message when you put a disc in and close the tray. What this means is that the XBox 360 thinks that there is no disc in the system.
If you click into the following U.S. based website, you can find more information about this issue, the parts to fix it yourself and you can also send your XBox 360 to them to have it repaired:
If this happens online and only on a particular disc Ibelieve that this is not a problem with your Xbox 360 console, it might be the game server for COD MW2 or due to your internet connection which might be having some unstable connection to MW2 server. If Gears is working smoothly you should not be bothered having your console getting RROD.
Check to see if there are any scratches or laser burn marks on the discs. Scratches or marks on discs will render game discs unplayable or will freeze the game and will often show a message stating “Disc Read Error” or something to that effect. Best remedy for starters, is to clean the discs and make sure there are no scratches or marks left on the play-side of the discs. A common problem that Xbox owners are reporting is if the console is moved during play, a whirring noise is heard and then when the disc is removed, very visible laser burn rings are found on the disc. Laser burn, looks like complete or partial circular scratches around your disc, also known as “the ring of death”. This occurs to discs when the games console has been moved whilst playing, from an upright to a horizontal position or vice versa or simply knocked against or the wires may have been just tripped upon. Discs are then impaired by a ring of laser burn, which is a circular scratch into the disc. Some home remedies may help with very light scratches on some discs but professional disc repair services is normally required to restore disc laser burn damage back to "As Good As New Condition".
For further help on Xbox & Xbox 360 disc repairs, visit:
Check the “More Info” & “FAQ” Sections for further details on disc repairs and related matters. If this laser burn scenario is consistently happening to your game discs especially if the console has not been moved or bumped against while the discs is in play, the games console itself may require repair. You should contact Microsoft for assessment and guidelines. Hope this Helps!!
Hi, it sounds like you have the" open tray" error that is very common with the 360s. How you fix this is you take your DVD drive apart and look at the laser assembly, there are 2 screws on the side of it, look at the one on the left. Turn this screw to the left a VERY little bit at a time and keep checking it every time you turn it until it stops the open tray error.
it sounds like there is a problem with your disc tray,
typically movies will play slower and have less potential for being thrown out of sync and out of line. With a faster rotating disc you have more potential to mess something up. I would suggest laying the xbox flat (longwise) on a stable/level ground and trying it again. This should clear up your problem.
Although you can play xbox on the side it is easier on the machine if you have it the traditional longway down.
hope this helps.
Bad Cdrom/dvd The laser going bad is a pretty common issue with the drives, since it's a Hitachi that spindle motor could be all gunked up with dirt as well and cause that issue also.
if ya have a Hitachi, if it's a Samsung it could just be the laser. http://www.llamma.com/xbox/Repairs/xbox_dvd_repair.htm
Getting to the dashboard screen is a good thing but still cannot rule out a bad circuit board or power supply.
All the symptoms point to a bad DVD drive but the opening/closing by itself do indicate a problem with the microprocessor.
Can you turn the power on and off with the small button?? If not, would definitely suspect bad board.
