1 Answer

First, you will need two keys. Put one key in the ignition and turn the ignition to the "on" position (instrument cluster lights come on). Make sure the hood, trunk lid, and both doors are closed. Take the other key and stick in the driver's door lock. Turn the key counter clockwise and hold it in this position until you hear three beeps. Release key but don't remove it. Press the lock or the unlock button on the remote until you hear a beep. Once you hear the beep from the remote, turn the key in the door counter clockwise again until you hear three more beeps. The three beeps are the signal that you are entering/exiting program mode. The one beep from the remote lets you know that the remote has been programmed.

I lost my key to my 2002 vw cabriolet, how do i get a replacement?

Call Volkswagen with your VIN number which is the number on the door sticker using numbers and letters and about 17 digits long. They may also need to program it once it comes in. Let me know if you need anything else.

Do in need a scan tool to program a 2001 cabrio key

Programing the button REMOTE portion of the key is simple.
You do need 2 keys. You must be able to lock the drivers door and have the red led alarm light next to the lock button blink. If it does not blink, the alarm does not know the door is closed and will not go into program mode. Put one key in the ignition switch, turn on, do not start engine. Close the door, use 2nd key, turn door lock and hold in lock position for 10 seconds. Release key to neutral position.
Press a button on the remote, within 2 seconds press the same button again, the turn signal lights will flash,
this indicates your remote matches the car system and is now recognized. Unlock door remove key from ignition.
So don't pay extra 99 cents to $5 for these instructions in hopes of getting the KEY to function with the car.
Instructions are only for the keyless remote, not the key.

I changed battery and now it dosnt work

You lost your program of the key module follow these instructions.

To Program a Remote for a VW
Put your good key in the ignition and turn to "ON", do not start the engine. Make sure all the remotes you want to use are present because they have to be programmed at the same time.
- Close the door and insert key #2 into the driver's side lock. Lock the door.
-Within 5 seconds of locking the door, press unlock 2 times on the new remote, key #2.
-(if this is remote #3, press unlock 3 times. if this is remote #4, press unlock 4 times).
-If there's a chirp or beep do not press it again. This means that the car has recognized the new keyless entry remote.
- Repeat with other remote or unlock the car and turn off - done.

I need keys for 98 cabrio. I only have copy keys and they dont work well. would like to know if car has keyless entry. First VW I have owned and I am unfamiliar with thier options.

Yes they do have keyless entry. I believe that year has the "banjo" style remote. What about for the ignition tho? You can find a place that will make a key directly from the door lock or the ignition and the best price I found was $200. If you still just want to go the remote route you can find em used for, if I remember correctly, around $60-$70 they're pretty pricey but they're over $100 brand new. I bought 2 used online and one of them didn't work, just fyi. Hope this helps.

2002 VW Cabrio Key question...and power lock question.

these cars are known for having switches in the door lock module fail. its an easy repair but an involved and time consuming job to access the unit in the door.
