Question about Jl Audio 250/1 Car Audio Amplifier

1 Answer

Sealed subwoofer box with two 10" jl audio subs hooked up to jl audio 250/1

Everything works great but sometimes I get a funny noise like there are two signals going thru the amp. I hear the bass from the music but I can also hear something else. If I turn the volume down all the way I can still hear the funny noise at the same level. When I go to the back hatch area with the volume down all the way I see the subs going in and out and they make a noise like they are rubbing. I don't know how else to explain the noise but from the driver seat it almost sounds like the rear wiper is running that’s the kind of noise it makes it’s like some kind of interference. Thanks for the help

Re: sealed subwoofer box with two 10" jl audio subs...

You mite have the gain to high turn it down a bit just because there's a max gain doesn't mean you need to use it . you mite have to turn the bass boost up. you should get a bit better sound out of it

1) Check the Subwoofer for continuity - At the subwoofer, one at a time, test the terminals for Continuity using your Digital Multi-Meter; if your DMM doesn't have a Continuity test, use the Resistance, or Ohms, test and check for Resistance in the Subwoofer Coil (be sure to disconnect the subwoofer wiring before performing these tests).
2) If they test out good, hook the wires back up and test the terminals at the terminal cup or at the Amp hookup if you didn’t use a terminal, don't hook it up to the amp yet. Sometimes the wiring inside the box can be a problem if it has come loose, or isn't making a great connection.
3) If you have a Sub or multiple Subs with Dual Voice Coils, or multiple Subs with Single Voice Coils, make sure your wiring is correct by checking here:
4) Make sure there are no Hi-Pass filters, crossovers, or multi Channel switches enabled.
5) Replace your RCA cable/s with known working RCA cable/s from the Source/Head Unit to the Amplifier/s.
6) Check your Head Unit settings; make sure the Bass is turned up and/or the Subwoofer setting is turned On.
7) If you are still getting no or low output, try plugging in an MP3 player or CD player using a headphone to RCA adaptor and check for sound output. If there is still no or low output, your Amplifier outputs are probably burned out.

I want to know if it is possible to connect two JL Audio 250/1 amps together to power three subwoofers.

I hate to be the barer of bad news but no I do not believe it is possible to do that and you will probably fry both amps if you attempt it.
But you can connect three subs to one of them

My amp

First thing is to make sure that the 15" subwoofer's RMS power rating (not peak power rating) is at least 250watts. Also, you have to be sure that the woofer is in the right enclosure. I am guessing that since you didn't post a model number for the subwoofer or the type of box it is in (i.e. - ported or sealed) that you are putting the woofers in too small of a box or too big of a box. Trucks typically don't have much room for woofer enclosures, so many people favor smaller boxes. The incorrect box will affect how the speaker cone moves due to the internal pressure in the box. Too much movement without and the voice coil hits the magnet causing that "popping" sound. reducing the gains on the 250/1 can often help.

Sub makes loud noise when car is shut off

Does it make noise if the RCAs are unplugged? If not, the RCA shield on your head unit may be burned open.

If the amplifier is set to signal sense, it will take longer for the power light to go off.

250/1 powers on but no output

If the amp is not going into protect, the power supply FETs have probably failed. In the corner of the amp near the toriodal transformer, there are 4 FETs against the heatsink. When these fail, the 47 ohm resistors at the base of the transistors often fail. If the resistors are dark, it generally means the FETs have failed. If you disconnect the amp from power and measure the resistance from leg 1 to leg 2 of the power supply FETs, a reading of near 0 ohms indicates the FETs have failed.
