Question about JVC AV-48WP30 48" Rear Projection Television

1 Answer

JVC AV-48WP30 will not give a picture

I had a convergence problem. So I replaced the convergence chip "STK's", and worked great for a day or so. I was watching the game, and then the picture went out for a second and come scrolling back on, but with both blue and red convergence way off. I was unable to adjust it as well. Then turn off and back on a couple of times. Then I get this thump out of the speakers about 10 to 15 times, with no picture. Then that stops and the blue light will flash. BTW if I completely disconnect the convergence board, I get a picture back. Does this mean the STK's went bad again?
If it is not the STK going bad again,I have done a little reading I have seen messages on this problem talking about the deflection board is bad, IC's on the CRT driver will need to be replaced. What/where is the deflection board and/or CRT driver? How much are these parts? How hard is it to replace these parts in the TV?
Thanks for your time and help.

First off, thanks for the quick reply. I had a hardware engineer at work install the chips for me, so no overheating there. But my question is this how can you tell if the chips are generic vs. Sanyo? Just trust the dealer? By the time I read this post, I bought some STK392-150's already (different dealer). Is there a big advantage to going with the STK392-180's over the STK392-150's?

And I will for sure use compound this time. Again, thanks for your help.

no picture coming out thru cable connection but with dvd video picture is showing normal. what can i do to fix it

  • nickmind Dec 18, 2007

Well replacing the IC's gave me a picture. So that problem is fixed. Now for some reason I can not change the convergence on the blue side, also green is now out of wack as well.

So I'm testing the tv out, and I feel the red side heat sink getting very hot to the touch with one a couple mintues of use, and the blue side heat sink is still cold. Does the heatsink normally get hot pretty fast.

I traced the pins on the blue side chip, they seem to be connected. What can my problem been?

    Thanks for your time.

Replace the convergence IC`s again using original Sanyo chips (STK 392-110 or STK 392-180). Make sure to use plenty of heat sink compound. Coat the entire back side of the chips. Also look to see if any of the low ohm resistors are burned. A shorted chip will cause the thumping sound and the set will shutdown. I am guessing that you used generic IC`s as a replacement. They are cheap and the leggs fall off when you apply too much heat during soldering. Dont wory about the CRT driver or the deflection board, they are probably fine.

The Sanyo chips have a 5 digit or letter serial number on them. The difference between the chips 110, 150, 180 are the power they handle. 110 watt 150w 180w. JVC uses 2 penny sized squirts of heat sync compound. ( not enough) to dissapate the heat very well. I have fixed many 48wp30`s for bad convergence and never had a problem with the deflection or driver boards.

Looking from the front of the set the red chip is on the left and the blue is on the right. The green is shared between the red and blue . The red chip controls the red vertical and horizontal and green vertical. The blue chip controls the BV, BH, and green horizontal. The chips normally get hot pretty fast. If you have a cold chip it means that it is not conducting. You may have some open resistors on the board or one of your plugs not seated properly. Another posibility is that there is no voltage getting to the cold chip because of an open trace or resistor on the board. Both chips get fed power from the same supply.

JVC AV-48WP30 Convergence Problem

If you know how to solder, I would suggest to just replace the STK ICs and some of the low value resistors. If you do not how to solder replacing the entire board is the way to to get the TV fix. You might still need to adjust the convergence after the board replacement.
Let me know if you need further assistance.

Yes, it does not happen often but you may have installed or got a new chip that is bad--you did apply heat sink compound to the new chips?

Check all the resistors carefully when you do this and double check all the soldering you do.
