Resetting a router following the instructions in the users guide will generally erase all configuration in the router -- meaning all configuration will need to be completely redone. ASSURE YOU HAVE THE APPROPRIATE INFORMATION TO COMPLETE THIS TASK BEFORE STARTING.

User guides can generally be obtained by accessong the manufacturers website -- assuming the category is correct -- this link should get you to the belkin support web site.

There appear to be up to 4 questions to answer at the top of the screen to get access to downloadable information. If you need additional assistance please ask.

A second alternative -- assuming you are attempting to get a wireless passphrase you may be able to access it in the wireless adapter configuration of another computer you have already setup and avoid having to deal with the router password issue at the present time.

Third option - if it is not the router password that is the issue the configuration manual may allow you to access the router and obtain the WEP or WPA passphrase necessary to configure the wireless adapter. Meaning I misinterpreted the problem (which password you lacked) in the initial response.

I'm trying to connect wirelessly, but its asking for a sercurity key code! What is this and where do I find it? Help, pls!

Network security key
Some later model wireless routers have the Password (ie.Encryption key) and the SSID already configured in the wireless router and this information is printed on a label on the bottom of the router.
These settings can be used to configure the wireless card and wireless adapters in your computer/laptop.
If these settings do not suit you, then it can be changed to suit your requirements.
The encryption key secures your data and wireless connection from unauthorized access. To configure the wireless settings in the router, connect a LAN cable from your computer to the wireless router, then open a Browser on your computer and enter the router's configuration IP address, then enter the admin login and password and then go to the wireless settings and configure the SSID and Encryption key.
The router's encryption key can be a Passphrase or the WEP or WPA or WPA2 key.If you use the Passphrase method select either WEP or WPA or WPA2 to generate the encryption key. You can enter the WEP or WPA or WPA2 key with 8 to 63 ASCII characters or 64 Hex digits.
Most people use Passphrase which is easier to remember eg. I was born in January 1988.
The strongest and latest security is WPA2, the weakest and oldest is WEP. To connect to your wireless router from the computer/laptop, configure the wireless card in your computer/laptop with the router's wireless settings ie SSID, plus the WPA or WPA2 encryption key. Then computer/laptops can communicate with your wireless router.

Welcome to Fixya. If you need the WEP key or Network Key you need to access the Wireless Settings Page.

To access the router page just open a browser then type, the Default username is blankand the password is admin. Go to the Wireless Tab select Wireless Security under the Security Mode you will see there Network Key or Wep Key. The Network Key or Wep Key serves as a password or security code on your network to make it secure.

Thanks for using Fixya.

Router password is the password to access the router settings.
SSID is the network name. When you try to connect to the wireless network on your laptop, you will see this network name.
If your network is secured network then it will ask you for the network key or the password. You need to enter the ' security key '.

Forgot network password

Hello...if you need to retrieve your network key, eg to connect a new laptop to the internet, this can be found within your router settings.

Here's a rough guide:

1. Type your router IP address, eg or whatever is correct for your model, into a web browser address bar

2. Enter your router username and/or password at the prompt. The defaults for Linksys are username: (left blank) and password: admin : but if you have set a router password/username, please enter these.

3. In the router user interface, go to the section headed Wireless Security, or similar. Every router is different, so you may have to hunt around a little. Key words to look for are Security, Wireless Settings, Encryption, WPA, (or WEP).

Your network key will be somewhere here. It might be labelled PSK, pre-shared key, WPA or WEP key, WPA-PSK, network key, WPA shared key, passphrase etc – but that’s the one you need.

For more details, you could pick up a manual from the Linksys site or view the help pages; otherwise, please come back to Fixya with your model number, and let us know how we can help. Good luck

I just got a new hard drive for my laptop and I can not connect to the internet (wireless) now. I do not know, nor recall having, any password. Please help. this tip any help to you? You only need part (1) 'Retrieving a lost Network Key' - this is the key/password Windows asks for when you try to connect wirelessly. (Skip part 2..).

You can pick up a manual from the Buffalo site if you need one. I think the router IP address may be and default password is blank (ie no password), but you would need to check your manual to be sure.

Please come back to Fixya if this does not help.

My eee pc 900 series wont conect to internet

Your computer is asking for the WEP key which is the security key setup at installation so anyone who wants to enter your network must know the password. Check the simple things first, like your CAPs Lock key is off, Num Lock key is off, double check you are typing in the correct password. You can change the WEP key with the software that came with the wireless installation.

Need a network key

Since you want to access the router setup page and get the wireelss security for your laptop you can try this:
Open a web browser like internet explorer or Netscape. Enter the ip address of your router in the address bar of your browser. In the picture above the address bar has in it. Just replace all of that with the ip address of your router. By default the ip address should be set to
You should see a box prompting you for your username and password. Enter your username and password now. By default the username is blank, and the password is admin. Click the Ok button to log in to your router.
When you're already on the setup page of the router youc an go to Wireless tab and click on Wireless security and there you can find the security key that you need....

If the default password didn't work you need to reset the router by pressing the reset button for 15 seconds so it will be back to its default settings with default password which is admin.

But if you successfully log in to the router page just go to the Wireless tab and there you can find all the wireless settings of your router including the wireless security key...
