Question about Dell Inspiron 6000 Notebook

Screen went dark (almost completely)

My 3 year old Inspiron 6000 just went dark on me while I was away from it and it was hibernating. The screen won't come back on and I can just barely see a ghost of a welcome window when I rebooted. Any suggestions?

I tried the fn/ brightness key already and the power cord. It should work on the battery alone anyway.

I'm thinking of trying the inverter board first. Other sites seem to think if you can see a faint image, it usually is the inverter board and not the backlight. what think ye?

i'm having the same problem. i have switched to a new lcd and a new inverter and it has not helped. any other ideas out there?

I have the exact same problem - screen is VERY dark, but if you look very closely at it, you can still see what is going on -and everything else seems to be working fine.

have any of these solutions worked for anyone else?

Same thing happened to me. I removed the battery (which was bad anyway) and the screen worked. Go figure.

Sounds like your LCD went out, I would have suggested the brightness thing as well as my laptop will go to a lower setting when the power is unplugged to save battery life.

The only other thing you could do is make sure the connection is good on the video connection to the motherboard. If you can't use this system with a docking station and a monitor you could always check ebay for a replacement LCD.

Good luck!

That sounds worthy of pursuing. I would check that out as well but if it were me I would dig around for a deal on a complete replacement that had both the inverter and the LCD monitor just in case you need one over the other. Worst case scenarion you can turn around and sell the other one that you may not have needed back on ebay to someone else with a similiar situation.

Same thing! I went to control panel, then display, then settings, and clicked on troubleshoot. Immediately the brightness came back and all is well. Shut down and rebooted and all is still well.

Check your power cord and make sure it's plugged in all the way, and if it is, check your brightness setting.

Usually it's the Fn key + an arrow key. Make sure the brightness is up all the way

Dark screen ,fn does not work

I would suggest connecting the laptop to an external monitor, just to make sure that it is all running correctly.

If you can see a very dim image on the screen then the backlight is out. This can be a light problem or the inverter that powers the backlight could be bad. The inverter is not real dificult to change and also is not very expensive. If it is the backlight tho, it is easier to just change out the entire screen.

Hope this helps

Dell Inspiron laptop monitor is gone very faint

Connect an external monitor to the laptop and power it up, if you see a clear image on an external monitor, this means your video card is OK.

If you see a dim image or flicking image on the LCD screen it means you have a backlight problem.

Dim image and/or dark display on the laptop's LCD screen indicates a faulty LCD backlight and it could be the inverter that supplies high voltage to the CCFL lamp or it is the CCLF lamp is nearly burnt out or burnt out, most likely this is the case.
The inverter can be replaced easily but the CCLF lamp is more time consuming and requires soldering skills.

you try pressing the power button once?  or maybe even pressing any keys.
also try adjusting your power management
