Question about Dryers

Trouble with Maytag Legacy gas Dryer

Our Maytag gas dryer runs (and drys) for 30-45 minutes, then shuts off and won't restart for 30 minutes. We have redirected the vent so there is on 90 degree bend and 3 feet of stove pipe to the outside. We have replaced the motor, timer, and thermostat. Maytag won't even talk to us any more. What is shutting down this dryer?

Thanks. The bathroom has been recently re-wired, and there are a couple of strange electrical things going on that puzzle us. So we are going to call in the electrician to troubleshoot.

You were right on. I bought a voltmeter and checked the voltage both static and operating. Then I checked it all over the house. The meter read 145 volts at every outlet. That explains why we were popping light bulbs every three weeks, and why the motors on the new bathroom exhaust fans had burned out. But before we could call the power company, the transformer outside blew, and they replaced it. The voltage now reads 120 volts, and the dryer works just fine. Thanks for the suggestion. I would not have considered that.

Please provide the model number and I will see if I can figure something out.
It sounds like you have covered the common problems. Usually a motor is the cause for this problem, it gets hot and shuts down until it cools off. I have had some problems with the auto dry controls on the Maytags also.
Are you equiped to do some voltage checks if we need too? This would help in knowing where you have power when it quits.
Thanks/Mike

When you say the dryer shuts off, I am assuming the motor is stopping and the whole machine quits running. If this is the case, and you have installed a new motor and made sure nothing is inside the blower housing causing the motor to drag, check your voltage at the wall outlet. If you have more that 125 volts or less than 115 volts, check some other outlets on the same circuit and if they are the same reading call the power company to check the transformer supplying the house. A high or low voltage will cause the motor to heat up and kick out.

If I have misunderstood your problem and it is only the burner that is shutting off and not the motor, then you need new coils on the gas valve. There are 2 of them mounted on the valve. You replace them as a set called the "coil pack". When one starts going bad they will usually work fine until they get hot then stick and not cycle back on.

Let me know what you find out. I have a call on a heat pump to run today and will be checking back in this evening.

    Thanks/Mike

Also, when you check the voltage to the dryer, if it has 120V with the dryer off, check it again with the dryer running to make sure it doesn't drop. If it drops when you start the dryer you may have a loose connection in the circuit and may need an electician.

Glad to be of help. It is a common problem that is often overlooked. I have done it several times myself.

Sounds like timer is stuck in one place and not counting down, can it be done manually? If so replace timer.

Hi, I have a Maytag gas dryer MDL# LDG8200AAW and its great my wife would not trade it for one of the new ones at all. The problem that I'm having with the dryer is that it drys the clothes but it does not...

Correct, Your belief is wrong! Your wife's belief is correct, the best dryer ever made!
If this happens only when you are using it on an auto setting then it is probably an air-flow problem,a dirty exhaust system. Clean it out!

The dryer turns on, then drys for a few minutes, then shuts down

this is either a fuse ,relay or heater problem your best to call for a technician unless you can measure continuity between each of these with the power off .90 % of the time this is due to a build up of lint inside the dryer

The igniter fires the gas, it burns for a minute or less, then stops and won't restart unless the dryer is stopped and restarted? Is this a coil problem?

Sounds like a clogged vent. If you let it run for a few minutes after it shuts off, it will come back on. Your overtemp. thermostat doesn't allow it to work, because the hot air is not being sucked in. But to answer your question, not the coils for sure in my opinion. When coils fail, it won't turn on after 10 min of running or more. Not right away.

It is probably electronic gas valve, or safety valve that let the gas flow and shuts off immediately. Better take it to the repair shop will save yourself $75.00 service fee.

Maytag Neptune MDG 5500 AWQ heats sporatically

your dryer has a safety feature that it will not run or heat when the door is opened. It is so no gas fumes are exhauseted into your home. Once the safety is engaged, It will not allow the dryer to restart for a short while. It should clear itself after only a few minutes. Hope this helps, good luck.
