Belt on my kenmore 70 series washing machine

How do you change the belt on a kenmore heavy duty 70 series extra capacity top loading clothes washing machine? I'm a total beginner. Can I just unscrew the back and easily find the belt and replace? We think it's the belt, because it doesn't agitate or spin.

I followed your directions and removed the motor just fine. What does the motor coupler look like?

    Thank You so much.

The rubber piece had gotten so shredded it was barely recognizeable. Two of the plastic pegs had snapped off. But it looks like the right part.

We ordered the part. We will let you know if it goes in all right.

    Thank You!!!!!

    We got the coupler.

It took some elbow grease to get it on the gearcase shaft, but,it is the right part.

We have a functional washing machine!

Thank you for saving us some money!

    Happy new year!

Your washer should be a direct drive unit, it has no belt. If you hear the motor running but nothing is happening you probably have a broken motor coupler. The coupler is about $10.

Pop off the trim pieces on each end of the console.
Remove the two screws that hold the console to the cabinet and flip the console back.
Remove the two clips that hold the cabinet to the rear panel of the washer and unplug the lid switch harness. The cabinet will tilt forward and slide off.
Remove the clips holding the water pump and move it to the side.
Unplug the wires from the motor and remove the clips holding it.
You will see the motor coupler.
Make sure you can turn the gearcase shaft with a pair of pliers so it is not locked up.
Post back and let me know what you find or if you need any help.

The coupler is a round piece of rubber sandwiched between 2 plastic pieces between the motor and gearcase. This link should go to a picture of it.

Yours may look a little different if it is an older style, but this is the replacment.

70 Series Kenmore Washer Agitates in Heavy Duty regardless of switch selection

Yours is a 2 speed motor. Does it spin in 2 different speeds. If so, then it most likely is designed with only to agitate in 1 speed. If it only spins in one speed, then your motor is defective
