A couple of years back Sony had a recall on this camera because of defective image sensors. I called Sony and got an address to UPS the camera to and got it back 2 weeks later working just fine and got a couple more years of life out the camera before I got the 31:22 error.

I presume you have checked to see that the lens cap is off? You could also make sure you don't have the "Fade-in" function turned on. Do you see anything at all? Text? If you see text, it indicates that the LCD monitor is working and that you are in some mode that is not letting light get into the camera. Make sure you are ion the all-automatic mode. If you see nothing at all, I'll bet there is something wrong with the screen or the wires connecting to the screen. Do you get an image in the viewfinder?
