Question about Dell Dimension 8400 PC Desktop

2 Answers

Black screen a black, blank screen appears when restarting, with a flashing underscore cursor in the top left corner. after rebooting, the same problem occurs??? this has happened in the past, and seemed to resolve itself. HELP! I have a Dell 8400 Dimension Desk Top and it also will not load the Seagate External Hard Drive if plugged in. If I unplug it, reboot, then plug in the Seagate, it works perfectly. It shuts down ok with it plugged in.

It's not exactly the answer I was looking for, of course, but it makes sense.

I have seen this with many of the Dell systems. Some external USB devices will cause a boot lockup as described. You can always check the BIOS in the BOOT section to make sure you are not trying to boot using a USB device to see if you can rid yourself of this issue.

Usually in a dell to get to the SETUP you press f2, then navigate to the BOOT field, and you should be able to read how to change the options for booting your system. If you can disable booting from USB you may stop this from happening again.

Some USB devices seem to cause this problem. I've had it myself. USB devices when hooked up cause the computer to freeze as it hard for USB drivers to be loaded outside of windows. Try updating you windows thru windows update though even updated I still run into the problem sometimes. If updating dosen't work you need to keep the drive unhooked while booting then hook up in windows.

When starting up laptop all i get is the vaio logo then a blank screen with a blinking underscore in the top left corner

Try rebooting and pressing F8 when it starts until after the Vaio logo - this should allow you to attempt to boot into safe mode (without networking for now).

When in safe mode - open a command prompt by pressing the windows key on your keyboard and R.
Now type - cmd - (not the - )

A black box comes up so type - chkdsk /f - then answer Y - press enter and close the window.

Restart the system and see if it boots into Windows.

Hope this helps - good luck.

Blank screen nothing left

ok...do you have the install CD around? Slip that into the cd/dvd reader, and restart. The system should read that, and ask to reinstall your o/s. Hopefully, your data is still good on your hard drive.

Is your HDD LED flashing? -Try pressing F8 on startup to show the boot menu option of your OS if it is Windows. If it does appear use Safe Mode first. If not successful try re-installing your OS.
