You have a bad lid lock switch. On Whirlpool type topload washers all you need to do is insert a flat bladed screwdriver between the front panel and top panel, near the corners and pry the top panel up until it releases from the upper frame to access the lock. Now you can manually slide the lid lock out of the lid. The switch is located in control panel and if your back is as painful to remove as my Maytag was I'd recommend holding the lid lock back or blocking the hole it slides through in the lid.
Testimonial: "My Lid can open , it's flashing , but is stuck in whatever cycle"
SOURCE: washer won't run through a complete cycle-stops at 29 minutes
There is a service manual behind the control panel it will show you how to test the door locks. If might have a bad lock solenoid.

This problem is commonly attributed to a lid switch malfunction. If the model number you have this listed under is correct, the lid switch is mounted under the washer top casing, on the right hand side. It is activated by a plastic piece on the lid (called a "Lid Strike") through a small hole on the rim of the wash tub opening. In many cases the lid strike breaks off the lid, or the lid switch becomes loose and no longer makes contact. Inspect the lid to make sure the lid strike is still intact, and then inspect the mounting screws (adjacent to the small opening on the wash tub rim) and make sure they are snug. The humming sound you hear when the lid is closed may just be the timer motor running. If your washer is not configured in this manner, please post back with your COMPLETE model number (located along the tub rim under the lid) so I can confirm how your washer IS configured. I hope this helps you.
If you determine that your lid switch is broken, please let me know and I will provide you with the steps necessary to repair it yourself (simple repair job). I can also give advice on where to purchase a replacement.
NOTE: Placing heavy objects on the washer lid can cause the lid to bow and also affect the way it contacts the lid switch.

For replacement parts - head on over to PartSelect.com or RepairClinic.com and enter in your full model number for a full parts listing.
I recommend both sites because ...
FixYa has no affiliation with either site - I have been using and recommending them for years - trouble free.
PartSelect has a great schematic database for locating the part on your unit and great "testimonials" for each part that often times includes HOW-TO information.
RepairClinic has pictures of each part they sell and also a great how-to and troubleshooting for basic repairs.
If your unit has never been serviced - there should still be an original service manual enclosed in plastic taped to the inside of the shell.
In the service manual are Error codes, maintenance procedures, and troubleshooting steps you can follow.
Anything too complicated or beyond your scope should be handled by a professional.
If you think you want to tackle the repair - and have gotten stuck on a step - reply to your question and I will be glad to help you out.
