I have a Brother Copier MFC-7820N and it keeps telling me the back door is open - I have cleaned, shut/open, removed everything I can think of and the message will not go away! HELP please we need the copier/fax/scanner in the office. Thanks
First Isolate whether it is the Side Door or their is a door on the rear make sure that isn't open. What I would do is Physically open and re-close all doors again the tabs and sensor get sticky after awhile. If not you could have a BAD sensor door switch.

The "back cover open" message is usually caused by a paper jam inside the printer.
Follow these steps to rectify the problem.
1. Unplug the power to the printer.
2. Open the back and front cover.
3. Remove the drum and toner, this may be difficult because it may be stuck; don't be afraid to pull hard, you wont break anything.
4. Check for any foreign objects, most likely a peice of paper.
5. Reinstall the drum and toner.
6. Make sure to close the front and back covers.
7. Turn the power back on.
If the message stays after all this, there may be a sensor not working.
I have fixed this problem on my 7820n printer by brother.
open the back door, then inside there will be a black colored other kind of like door that pulls back away from the roller. on this inner door is a black long thin plastic lever that runs from about the center of the inner door to the right. on the right end of it is a lever that slides along a curved increase on the right side wall. when both doors are closed this right end of the rod or lever moves up to close the gap between what is the sensor. this long thin plastic rod had snapped out of place and when i snapped it back in making sure the spring was correctly installed on the left end of it and the middle part of the rod slid correctly in its groove...the right end of the lever correctly closed the gap on the sensor (when both doors are closed) and the back door open error went away.
So that's how you really fix it!!!!

I just had same issue, it shared an outlet with a large volume work group copier, I unplugged it, opened and closed all compartments to make sure something open was not causing issues. I plugged it into different outlet and it appears to be back online. I have read some postings that this model has been known to draw over 15 amps. Its possible its starving for power. To test take to another room, plug in outlet by itself and see if it boots up.
first check and make sure that the back diir sensor is in place next if the paper is not going all the way in to the fuser section, you will have to remove the fuser and take it apart and remove paper in it, the paper is probally holding down the fuser sensor in side of it good luck brother sr, tech
Had same problem. Closer inspection revealed bit of paper out of sight. Removed the toner cartridge and worked to free torn paper. Then restart. Hope it helps.
I had the same error message. I also tried every compartment... Here's ultimately what my problem/solution was...
I turned the printer around and fully opened the back cover. I found that one of my kids had somehow fed a small piece of paper/cardboard into the printer. When I opened the back cover all the way I could see that obstruction (which I hadn't seen before). Pulled it out, and the error message went away. Works fine now.
I've been researching this problem. It seems to be a common issue with this MFC. Apparently it's not only a known issue, but Brother has no fix for it outside of replacement.
