Alt belt loose - 1993 Saturn SL1

7aFE or 4AFE engine.
old post, if you cant figure that out. then post vin, post photo of it.
my guess is it is a V belt, be nice to all that.
and you did say ALT and ALT tilts.
the alt has pivot on the bottom, and the top has built in
belt tension adjuster there,
one gets all that loose, and use it to set tension on the belt
about 10lbs force mid span on belt and 1/2" deflection
almost all V bets set like this for 100 years, even a tin lizzy.

Loosen the bolt on the upper bracket at the top of the alternator. Pry with a piece of wood to pull the alt over until there is 1/4in deflection on the belt. If the belt is still too loose after you reach the end of the bracket, you will have to but a slightly smaller belt.

could have been a loose belt to start with. check alt and water pump. if alt is not noisey and charging. check water pump for leaks and noise. make shore belt is in good condision and the correct tension

take center nut loose from the tensioner and there is a bolt to unscrew that loosens the pulley

Hi the altenator belt? if it keeps snapping then your altenator is rather starting to seize up or its not fitted correctly, normally if its squeking its to loose.

Spin the altenator by hand and see what it sounds like, if its hard to turn or noisey that the fault.

dissconnect battery,remove wiring from back of alt,loosen drive belt,undo alternator bolts to remove and just do reverse order to fit,adjust alt belt carefully not too tight not too loose,eg;about a few mm of deflection in the belt

Cables from alt to battery can be deposited/burned/oxidized. In this case battery wont get charged. Also check the alternator connections. Cable might be burned or not tight enough
Also serpentine belt might be not tight enough

loosen the alternator and use a prybar to put tension on it and tighten it back up in place.

Ok then lets start right from the beginning, what to check for:
-- loose battery connection pos and neg
-- loose or broken wires on the alt
-- loose alt belt
-- you said that you had the alt and battery tested? that was a load test?
-- battery could be just no good even if its new, that's why I asked if a load test was done, and the output of the alt is ok?

Try these please let me know then we can go from there.
