I also have a RCA 56" Model P56926 S/N 032551112, chassis PTK195RP TV. I have the same problem watch tv for a while, then the menu displays, will stay for 1 to 10 min, then go away on its own. During the time the menu is on the screen, all functions from the front or remote are locked, except for the mute. Unplug it for a long period of time, over night and it will usually work for 30 min. to an hour, and starts again. Sometime you can watch it for an hour or so and no problems. Now the sound goes away and the picture is OK, then later the sound comes back. Not the remote, it has been replaced. Joseph.Cochran@Embarq.com

I have an rca mod#r52wh77 and I have been having the same exact problem. It started out with just the menu popping up on the screen, so we switched remotes, unplugged everything and reconnected again. Then the volume bar started going up and down on its own, and now both the volume bar and the menu simultaneously go on all day. talk about frustrating.

It could be a failing tac switch or the micro. The only way to tell is signal trace the switch circuit with a 20mhz scope.. Need a shop for that if you don't have the equipment and it's not terribly expensive...
Footnote: either failure can and usually will get worse over time and may infect other function, vol,ch, power and so on... Find a reputable shop and take it in.. If you have any problem location one let me know..

RCA 52" Menu Keeps Popping Up and Down

I see this alot at the shop ... the front panel buttons have become damaged. THe best coarse of action is to replace the front button cuircit board assembly... **** there is a tempery fix untill you get the part... remove the front panel and take button cuicit board out...just use remote to control the tv. This is also a way to test to see if this is the problem.. if you romove the connector to the buttons and the problem goes away then the buttons are the problem. you get get this cuicit board at union electronics. You have to get the extended model number off the back ussally d52w20yx1 or yx2 or yxsomething...not to difficult a repair
