Kenmore 20702 Top Load Washer Problem

I can hear the motor running and the water fills and drains ok BUT the agitator won't move and it doesn'T move in the spin cycle. Basically it fills with water, sit there through the cycle and then emptys itself. It never moves and the cloths come out soaking wet and unclean. HELP!!!!!!!! I need step by step instructions to help solve this problem.

Thanks

already checked the the lid switch. There is a grinding sound between cycles. Water pumps out by no spin cycle. It sounds like a gear is broke or whatever drives the drum on the spin cycle.Mine is model 20702

When you turn it to spin it makes a gringing noise but does not spin.

First check the lid switch. Its a little slot inside the top panel and when the door is closed it has a prong that pushes the switch down when closed. It is a safety feature. If you can find this press the slot with a screwdriver or something and listen for a clicking sound. It is also possible that one of the wires has come off, so that may need to be looked at too. Also check the lid to see if the prong has been broken off. If you have both of these things checking good, then it may be a more complicated issue like power to the wig wag coils, or a timer. We can however eliminate the motor, belt and water pump as these all work. I would put my money on a simple lid switch problem though.

Model # 110 20702 991 Serial # CK 5008937 Type 111 Can hear motor running and makes a slight noise also drains but won't engage in washer spin

Hello, Thank You for using FixYa. I will be helping you today.Sounds like a failed motor coupler part number 285753. It connects the motor to the trans. You can lean the unit back to change this part. Remove the pump remove the motor and you will see it.

Washing machine will fill with water, but won't articulate

This assumes that you have a basic Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive, neutral drain (it doesn't spin until the pump removes most of the water) machine.

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:
http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/index.action

Enter your model number and you'll see a list of major sub-components with diagrams and parts.

I assume that you mean after filling, it won't begin the agitate cycle.

If you can hear the motor but the agitator won't move, it could be the "motor coupling". (See the motor section of the Sears site. This coupling is a fail safe between the motor and transmission. If the plastic prongs break, or the rubber center piece wears out, the transmission cannot agitate the washer.

If you can't hear the motor, it could be a timer problem.

Try to manually move the timer to a spin position and see if the motor / transmission move. If they do, it is most likely a timer.

Not sure if manifold is leaking

Leaks water...check the pump first. The fill valve and hoses may be the next step. See how to take apart info. With the use of plastic drain hoses on many machines today, this has become a common leak trouble maker. The drain hose can rub the wall or a pipe and this will rub a hole in the drain hose.

Kenmore Series 80 top loading washer that doesn't spin or agitate

Unplug machine, remove water pump and motor, behind the motor is a coupler, take broken parts to your local appliance parts store. Costs 16 bucks, replace the broken parts with new ones, reassemble machine. Never ever do a blanket/comforter in your machine again!!

Kenmore 22956 top loader quit running after agite cycle

If the timer cycles your lid switch is ok.
most likely: motor Switch (on Motor), condenser next to motor, motor itself, or wiring going from the time to the switch,

It is probably cost efficient to replace the unit rather than trowing parts at it .
