Indicator lights with high pitched squealing sounds.

I have a 1999 honda accord dx and just experienced a loud high pitched sound from the engine. This was followed by the battery indicator lights and door and trunk indicator lights coming on. I parked and shut off the car for a few minutes and when I started it up again it was fine ... concerned as this has never happened in the 5 plus years of owning the car. The battery is new this spring.

Sounds like the belt driving the alternator is loose. Have you checked this for proper tension? Charlie

Check the alternator drive belt,it may be loose and squealing.
the alternator itself could be also making a noise.
start the car with the hood open and listen to it.
look if the belt is cracked, loose or wet from oil or water etc.
things like thermostat housings leaking coolant can cause something like that.

High pitched squealing sound while driving...sound speeds up when you accelerate. it is a constant sound...not just when turning corners....seems like it is related to the engine speed....just a continuous...

alex53245,
Try checking your brakes, some might need replacement due worn out. If you open your brakes, you will find that your wear limit indicator is causing the squeal / francisjdies

Van brakes squeal/whistle even when stopped

Sounds to me like a dry, loose or worn serpentine belt. With the motor idling, lightly spray the serpentine belt as it's spinning with WD-40 or other oil based lubricant (Don't spray near the alternator). If this doesn't work, turn the mortor off and check the tension and for cracks or worn spots. The brakes will not squeal when you are completely still.

2000 Beetle Loud Whirring at start up

its your secondary air pump. it turns on in the cold morning to inject more air into your exhaust, something about emission. its normal to be high pitched. once on my car it was way loud, i looked and the hose had disconnected. either way its normal if its not super loud. but if its everyone is looking at me loud then check for loose hoses!

When backing up and sometimes turning right my brakes(?) make a squealing sound. Almost as though a pebble is caught and grinding on something. Honda 2004 accord-50.000miles. I was told I needed new brakes...

Your rear brake pads are most likely worn to the wear indicator which can make a high pitch squealing noise. It is very common that it will squeal when backing up, but not when applying the brakes. 50,000 miles is about the average life for rear brake pads on your car.
