modem is plugged directly into laptop but still not able to surf net. when looking at network connections it says it is connected but there is no sign of connection meaning the laptop cannot browse internet without a wireless connection

If the laptop is plugged into the lodem with a LAN cable then it does not need a wireless connection. The wireless connection is used with a wireless router to connect into the Internet without a LAN cable. Have you got an Internet Service Provider and has the modem been setup according to the ISP's instruction/configuration?

Re-boot your modem. unplug it wait about 10-15 seconds, plug it back in and it should get your laptop's address. Did you have the modem connected to another device? for example a Desktop pc or a xbox360 or ps3. if you did, everytime you switch devices, you need to re-boot your modem.
