Brother MFC-240C Change Unable 50

I get Change Unable 50 error. There is no paper jam or foreign object as the manual suggests for the possible cause of this error. I checked the other post but the picture is not so clear to take the unit's cover apart so that I get to see the print head. Please let me know how I can fix this problem. Thank you.

I can't see the picture of how to open the scanner cover. I can take off two small plastic pieces easily but the picture is not visible to see how to go beyond and access the print head. Would you please show me a picture with better resolution?

    Thanks a lot in advance.

I bought my MFC-240C printer about 6 months ago and it worked great. When printing on plain paper I don't have a problem, but if I try printing labels or photos I get an "Print Unable 36" error message. There is no jam as I can print to plain paper after this message.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

How do I get rid of unable to change 50 or 30? thanks

  • smascola Feb 08, 2009

I followed the instructions (and was able to make the pics bigger by saving them first...kind of blurry but better). Anyway, I took the printer a part seveal times and reseated the ribbon. Still nothing.....I started with print unable 50 message, then print unable 30 message.....then I got a printer jam message only to have it now turn to a print unable 32 message. I don't want to take the printer apart again....might just throw it out the window though.

I have to say though, the first time I took it apart, the ribbon was unseated. Then I didn't put it back in the right place. The last couple of times, I did put it back in the right place...even cleaned the ribbon. It does look like there are a couple of smudges on it though that won't come off. I have no idea how they got there.

Anyway, curses to Brother for making their error message so nonsensicle...and their "trouble shooting guide" equally useless. The weirdest thing is that wiht this error message NOTHING works, I can't even turn the printer off!!!!!!

The solution jast like Solution #3 :
1-remove the top cover
2-remove the panel
3- re-seat (re - s e a t !!! not re- s e t !! ) the encoded strip.
now i will write in hebrew :
1-לפתוח את המכסה של המדפסת
2-להרים את הקונטרול פאנל (איפוא שכל המספרים הצג וכו') יש שם 3 ברגים להוציא את הברגים להרים את המכסה הזה שם יש שני חיבורים שבכל חיבור יש כמה חוטים, להוציא את שני החיבורים הקטנים האלה ולהחזיר מחדש לפתוח מחדש את המדפסת . אני מקווה שזה יעזור

Sorry no chance of pic with higher resolution. This is restriced by fixya program (you can complain about that by contacting the team. Nay be there will be a more intelligent solution in future!)

Try to use a higher resolution by help of your browser.

Here are some more hints: You have to push down a plastic at the bottom next to the blue support to get the support loose. When opened the 2 plastics as you have written unplug the cables and flat cable so that you can push the scanner backwards from printer. loose screws which can be seen. you have to press/click the dashboard upwards to get to the hidden screwes which are left. there are two hosses on the left and right side where the printer cover is
mounted. now you should be able to pull up the cover. Et voila! You can see into the printer and simply fix the small foil which runs paralell to the ph right into position (This can be seen on the
last pic.) afterwards stick some adhesive tape onto the ph to
avoid the lift next time there is a jam!

When reassemble be careful with the encoder disc!
Do not stain nor break it when fixing the cover.

    @carolyn (mfc 845cw):

Did you had a paper jam before?

There could be some paper left on the traveling path way which cant be seen from out side.

Open printer as described and have a good look into both edges of the travelling path way (espacially the left side where the encoder disc is mounted on one of the gear wheels).

Press gently onto the ph cover to make sure it is clicked into the rail.

Do check the encoder strip (small plastic foil paralell to ph) Is it in right place upon the ph? (see pics for that)

My MFC-845CW reported "Unable to Change 50". It cleared after I manually inserted a sheet of paper at an angle and then moved the printhead over the paper. The paper absorbed some black ink, which surprised me but like I said the error cleared.

SOURCE: BROTHER MFC-240C,UNABLE TO CHANGE 50

This error is usually caused by the Carriage Encoder Strip being dislodged from
the sensor mounted on the Print Head/Carriage Assembly.

Unfortunately, you will need to remove the scanner assembly, and top cover assembly to check to see if the encoder strip has come out of the printhead assembly.

Clean Unable 46

Clean unable 46 means that the ink tank is full. You need a replacement tank installed and the count reset. This is a holder inside for the used ink, best to be a shop repair.

Error : Unable to clean

Unable to clean means that the waste-ink "sponge" is full. If you've already checked for small paper part (which is very unlikely to cause this error message), the error is mechanical. Unfortunately, that's not something us users can change, but the machine would require to be sent to service. So if your machine is not within warranty, I'd doubt it'll be worth the service cost.

Message unable to print 50

Machine Error 50 either means that there is a loose object inside the machine (usually piece of paper), or that there is a mechanical error which would need you to have the machine sent to service.
