Loud Fan Noise

I have owned my 42" Wega for almost two years and this past weekend the fan became noisy. I had never heard the fan before a couple days ago and now it is loud enough to be heard over the volume of the tv. How do I get the noise to go away and prevent it from returning in the future? If you recommend some basic maintenance, can you specify whether it could be potentially damaging to the tv if I make a mistake? How do I clean the fan, if necessary? How do I determine the temperature of the tv to see if the fan is working harder to bring the heat temp. down within the tv? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Please advise.

Re: Loud Fan Noise

The noise is most likely a colour wheel it is next to the lamp have it looked at. it is run by ball and bearings if you shut off the tv and it starts to wind down it is definatly the COLOUR WHEEL

Re: Loud Fan Noise

This is a free repair on the optical block/engine. For specifically a road mapping issue. (Where there is sparactic grouped lines on the screen of the TV)

Otherwise there is a full recall on all 50XBR1's and 60XBR1's for ANY video issue.
But the bullentin I do have on that is Confidential due to the amount of claims SONY could recieve. But here is a sample of the bulletin.

Models: KDSR50XBR1, KDSR60XBR1

Subject: Optical Block: Warranty Policy and Part matrix by serial number.

Resolution: As part of Sony’s commitment to quality, Sony is announcing that it is extending the limited warranty (parts and labor) for optical block replacements on the models listed above until October 31, 2008, regardless of purchase date. Authorized servicers should follow the normal process for warranty claims for this issue.

I have a Sony Grand Wega 61" that is only 2 years old and the screen goes black for a couple of minutes and comes back on. It's not losing sound, just the picture. It was only happening about once an hour...

It could be but it may be cycling due to heat; if you turn the sound completely down and listen at the rear of the set, you should hear the murmur of a fan. I would listen when video is there and when it isn't to sense if there is any difference in low-level noise coming from within.
If you don't hear a fan, it may be either burdened with a dust buildup or failed. Any set that uses high-temperature light sources will be protected against fire or internal damage by a thermostat of some nature that will trip and reset by itself.

I have owned a Sony Grand Wega for about 3 years now and for the past few months the TV has been making a very loud noise. I thought the noise was the fan but came to find out it was not the fan and was...

There is a fan beside the lamp chamber in this TV. There should be 4 fans total, and the one beside the lamp chamber might be making some noise. They are all bearingless fans, so the noise should be relatively low-pitched "whirr" if it is the fan. If the noise is more of a buzzing sound, it could be coming from the lamp driver (ballast) or from the lamp itself. Lamps tend to do strange things toward the end of their life.

If you have never changed the lamp, it is about time. They have a 2.5 -3 year life span with average use.

One thing you can try is to turn the TV on from a cold start, and watch inside the vent areas beside the lamp chamber. If you hear the noise before you see the lamp light up, then it is probably a fan. If it starts as soon as you see the lamp light up, it is the lamp or ballast.

Hope this helps you...

Sony 46'' WEGA TV

The mirror assembly has no moving parts, this unit has a minimum of 3 fans! if the fan blades get too dusty the fan will get noisy. Try cleaning the fans with compressed air.

Extremely loud fan...shaky picture

I would suggest to replace the fun to keep the light running cooler, the reason you loose the video after a period of time is because the fun is not providing enough cooling.
If the fun is noise it means the bearings inside of it are not working well anymore.
Let me know if you need more help.

Excessive Fan Noise

If I may - - the Grand Wega has a common color wheel problem and it may not be the fan at all... If while you are powered up listen carefully to the noise as you hit the power button - does the noise go away or is it still there? If rough noise stops and you can still here something in there running at a whisper then your problem is a bad color wheel not a fan... If it doesn't stop and it is the fan you'll most likely need to replace it.. Like Lemmor said you may need to clean your air intakes, which you can do with the hose on your vacuum but that is a brushless fan and no oil change in the world will help it..
