When its working....this is one of the greatest machines on the planet....but mines hasn't been used in a few years....with a tdk disc....its STILL stuck on "initializing" when I go CD TO CD or try any other mode....can't get the toggle switch to give me the various recording options.....just stuck on "initializing".......does this point to a laser problem?

PLUS.....where in Norhtern California .....Bay Area....can you go to have this dang thing fixed? Does anyone know of ANY repair places from San Francisco to San Jose?????

These older recorders are now starting to throw up problems. When the 785 was introduced, all audio discs were 74mins instead of the new standard of 80mins. And they were designed to only be written at slow speeds. Newer blank audio discs, that can be written at faster speeds, can throw up compatibility problems with these early recorders. I have a Philips recorder (not this model, an even earlier one) which will record to 80 minute discs, but only TDK branded ones. You could try these. I know it sounds silly that your Philips disc won't work in your Philips machine, I'm just sharing my experience, which seems similar to yours.

Is this machine new to you?

Have you ever made recordings successfully on this machine?

OPC fail can also occur if the recorder has taken a knock & the laser is no longer correctly aligned. It can also point to the laser becoming burnt out. In such cases a repair is your only option.

Let me know how you get on.

Maxell's audio cdr's still use the older dyes optimized for the slower speeds. Avoid the new 'Mr Audio' from Mr Data. From experience, all audio CDRW's are still using the slower speed / dye.

If the record side will not read a pressed / previously recorded CD it is more likely the laser is no longer emitting at the correct power. This can be adjusted by a service agent using philips' COMPair system but most repair agents won't touch units this old anymore.

I've just spoken to a friend who also has one of these older Philips recorders & he has the same problem.

As per my previous post, he fixed his problem by locating old stocks of blanks. New audio discs seem to have been manufactured & optimised for fast writing speeds (up to 32x speed) & this is causing the problem (you can't write at x1 or x2 speed to these new speedy discs).

Trying a few different brands of discs to try out is a whole lot cheaper than a repair. I suggest when you find a brand that works, you stock up on these discs as it seems they will become ever rarer.

Good luck!

The No OPC message means that the unit can't record. The laser power calibration for the burner failed the internal test with that disc. Was the disc a blank disc? Make sure that you use a clean CD-R or unfinalized CD-RW. Try a different lot or brand of CD-Rs or CD-RWs. If the problem persists, then the laser on the recorder is damaged. If the unit is under warranty, contact Philips. However, based on the date given on the manual, this may not be worth finding a shop to fix the unit. DVD/CD burners for computers are fairly cheap but I'm not sure of the specs for a replacement CD burner for inside this unit.

The manual is available from Philips here: www.p4c.philips.com/files/c/cdr765bk/cdr765bk_dfu_eng.pdf . The trouble-shooting information is on page 21 (page 23 of the PDF).
I hope this helps.

Hi.I have CD Recorder Marantz DR6000.After reading and initalizing blank CD-R Audio next on display show OPC ERROR.It,s reading all audio CD,s,oryginal, and CD-R.When I wanna finalized old CD-R,recorded by...

DR-6000 only accepts CD-R audio or CD-R music discs, not the standard CD-R discs. the difference is that the audio and music discs have the OPC formatted differently and they cost a bit more because they include the royalties fee. Standard CD-R discs won't work in this recorder. The correct discs have compact disc "digital audio" logo on them.

What is opc

"OPC stands for Optimum Power Control (or Optimum Power Calibration,
depending on who you believe; the process is sometimes known as Dynamic
Power Control (DPC) or Direct Read During Write (DRDW)). Most CD-R units
do a power calibration test before writing to adjust the laser power to the
correct strength. Different brands of media and different recording speeds
require slightly different power levels. Too much power can create oversized
marks which can interfere with each other, and too little power can produce
undersized marks which, in extreme instances, can cause read failures.

The recorder reads a recommendation for the initial power level from the
Recommended Optimum Recording Power value from the ATIP (section (2-38))
on the disc. This is used as a starting point for a series of write tests
in the Power Calibration Area (PCA) of the disc.

Running OPC goes a step farther by actively monitoring the write process
and adjusting the laser power as needed. If the writer encounters dust or
fingerprints, the laser power can be increased to burn through the
obstacles. This is especially useful for discs that are moved around
between recording sessions, such as CD-RW discs or multisession CD-Rs."

Disc won't initialize or record, keeps saying no disc or opc erro

I suggest you try cleaning the lens...

If the wrong disc was inserted, say a music disc, there would surely be a message to that effect. If no such message is displayed I would guess the unit is faulty.
