somewhere on the keyboard there should be a button that disables the touchpad to use an external mouse.you should be able to locate that button.sometimes it will lite up red.
See if you can operate the laptop using an external keyboard. If you can this will help for the next stage.
1.) Did you upgrade from Vista to Win7? This can cause issues with the keyboard filters. Try to (using the external keyboard and mouse) download the latest drivers for the the motherboard
2.) Have you at any time spilled liquid on the laptop? Dried residue, especially from sugared drinks like coke can cause not only shorting of the circuits but also corrosion. If this is the case, you will need to open the laptop to try and clean the affected area, you might need to replace the keyboard also
I have the same problem. Click the Windows start button. At the bottom is a Windows Serach box. Type 'keyboard'. A virtual keyboard appears. Click the NumLock key on the Virtual Keyboard. This should override the issue you are having and your keyboard and keys should now work. Otherwise reboot!
If you have an extra usb keyboard available you should be able to use the laptop.
I would suggest going into control panel -- then devices -- check to see if there is an "explanation point" next to the keyboard device.
If not, right click on the keyboard icon and click update driver.
I've also selected "uninstall" for this device and restarted the computer. Many times windows will reload the keyboard driver. The current one may be corrupted.
I called a tech friend of mine at HP and he said he didn't know of any combination of keys that could turn off the keypad. I would check Start, Control Panel, System, Hardware, Device Manager, Keyboard.
