Scanning function

I have had a 1210 for several years on both ME and XP platforms.Characteristically, the scanning function either stops working or gets 'lost'. My usual fix has been to remove both power and USB connection from the unit to let it refresh. This has worked well in the past. Lately though, when Windows reinstalls the device, there is no scanning function. I have tried to remove the driver and reinstall from original disc, but I get a message from Windows that more up-to-date software is available. Windows
XP will not let me reinstall from the original disc. The unit is admittedly 'old' and probably should be replaced, but this problem has been bugging me for some months now.

Any sugestions?
