I have a Black & Decker electric trimmer. Do I change the guard around or leave it where it is to do trimming? It is on the bottom--should it be on the top and how do I switch it?

1. • 1 Unplug the electric trimmer before trying to sharpen the teeth.
     
   • 2 Clamp the electric trimmer to the work table using two clamps if necessary so the Hedge Hog is firmly held down with the blade teeth accessible over the edge of the work table.
     
   • 3 Insert and secure grinding tip in hand-held multi-purpose tool.
     
   • 4 Maneuver the grinding tip so it is perpendicular to the facet of the Hedge Hog tooth.
     
   • 5 Sharpen teeth in one direction, being careful to try and maintain the same cutting edge angle on the sharpened tooth of no less than 35 degrees.

False, almost everything can be fixed unless it is so old you can find replacement parts. However, seeing that you are talking about a $40 hedge trimmer it would probably be cheaper to buy another unit. Black and Decker parts are available online, search by the model number or product number, not the name.

Check whether there is a fuse in the mains plug, this may have blown.

Is this the cordless Grass Hog? Turn the trimmer upside down so you're looking at the bottom. There are two orange tabs on either side of the spool -- push these in and the head should pop up so you can pull it out.

On the new spool, feed the cord out several inches and stick it through the hole in the trimmer where the old cord stuck out. Then pop the spool into the cavity so that the orange cover faces out (toward you). Pull the cord taut and make sure it is not long enough to hit the plastic guard. If it is too long and it touches the guard, pull the spool off and wind the cord in a little bit. If the cord is too short, pull the spool off and thread out a little bit more length and try again.

Turn the trimmer right side up and turn it on to make sure it works. If you hear a loud rapid thumping sound that sounds sort of like a machine gun, the cord is too long and is hitting the plastic guard.

Pull the line spool off and check to see if the line is on backward. There is an arrow showing the correct direction to wind. Good luck...Lee

I hate to say the unit may be burned up. It may be time to go out and buy a new one.

remove the guard
take out the 4 screws on the faring then split the case and remove the strings

gearbox!! get rid of it
