SOURCE: Ink System failure error message
Refer to NateOcean's solution at http://www.fixya.com/support/t297123-ink_system_failure. My Photosmart 3310 also had the loose plastic gear problem at the ink pump. Seems that all the HP inkjet printers use the same mechanical system and that gear can just slip off over time. My printer was two years old. NOTE: You have to remove the black and white gear with belt to replace the white gear that slips off. Remove the belt first by slackening the tensioner pulleys. Then there is a very small white clip against the axel that prevents the large gear from being pulled off - lift the white tab carefully with something sharp and the gear should slip off easily. The culprit gear then just pushes onto the hex shaft.
This operation should be possible by just opening up the left hand side of the printer.

ok, if you are using old cartriges, might want to try some rubbing alcohol on a tissue. This has worked on a number of cartriges in the past when i start getting missing pins. it lubricates the holes so in can flow again.
Take a q-tip and do the same if there's any kind of print head, but most print heads these days are built into the cartrige.

Ink may be new, but their nozzles may be blocked; depending on manner of storage. To be sure apply a folded tissue paper to the ink nuzzle and press firmly. If the tissue comes off well blotted with ink it means you still have a good amount of ink in it and the nozzle is not blocked. If not blotted or scantily blotted, it means ink is really low or nuzzle is blocked. To be very sure of this, place nuzzle in a plate/saucer with a bit water so that the nuzzle is soaked. Leave for about 10 minutes. Then apply the tissue again. If still not well blotted it means ink is really low or empty. If new you should return it for a replacement. In the case of blocked nozzles, the procedure may be repeated over to get results.
If this doesn't work let me know.

Turn off the machine using the power button, unplug the power cord from the back of the machine, remove the ink cartridges, wait 2 min, plug the power cord back in, press the on button, wait until the printer prompts that the ink cartridges are missing, then replace the ink cartridges. If this doesn't clear the error then you may need to re-prime ink through the system to clear the error. There are good instructions for doing this at http://www.ccl-la.com/blog/index.php/hp-photosmart-ink-system-failure-1/.

I had this same exact problem. Try doing:
1. Unplug the power cord from printer.
2. Hold both o.k and Cancel simultaneously.
3. Plug the power cable while holding the buttons.
I had to go through multiple tries of the solution above. I turned it back on, it shut off and I turned it back on again. I tried to print something and sure enough, it did a maintenance cycle and it works again.
This did not work the first time but after 3-4 times of doing both, TA DAH, it went through a lengthy maintenance cycle and then started working. Persistence paid off.
