5 seconds? Hmm, too long for inverter driver turning into protection caused by bad lamps. Also too long for PWM controller in the switching power supply.
Rather looks like overheating of the FETs in the inverter, they are driving HV-transformers. Open the monitor, remove metal lid and observe inverter board. If PCB under and around these FETs is darkened, replace them.
These Dells hard to open. Take the foot off and unscrew plastic cover. Then using flat screwdriver with wide blade separate plastic halves of the case, starting from bottom edge and moving to opposite. It might be sweaty.

Screen stays on approx 5sec than does black. turn off and than back on for another 5 sec. is it dying?

Hi.
Simple answer is...yes.
Your monitor is suffering from "capacitor deterioration" whereas the caps can't hold or maintain the voltage or charge as they were originally designed to do.

If this was a big tv, then I would say that it might be cheaper to have it fixed, but the repair costs for a monitor with this type problem usually costs as much, and some times quite a bit more than the cost of a new one.

The reson the costs are so high is the capacitors that they use in tv's and monitors aren't like the ones at your local electronics store.

They are high voltage/amperage capacitors, and usually have to be special ordered from Taiwan, or someplace like that.

The actual part might only have a cost of say $5.00, but after international shipping and manufacturing costs, as well as tarriffs and taxes levied by different countries that the parts would go through, then the final cost may be closer to $50.00 per capacitor.

And that's not even counting the cost of labor to do the repair work.

If you really want to get it fixed, then I would take the monitor to Fry's or BestBuy.

Both companies have specially trained service techs for just this repair.

Have them give you an estimate as to what the repair cost is, and you may want to go look at prices for new monitors, just to see what the difference in price is between the repair cost vs. the replacement cost.

I hope that this helps you out, and good luck.

Turn monitor on picture stays on for about 30 sec to 1min then goes off.

If it is just the screen going dark then your backlight controller is faulty and needs repair.

hi, extremely common problem for dell 17 in monitors. the capacitors and transistors on the power board internally have gone bad. to get repaired, it may cost 40-50 at a shop. i have repaired these in the past and they always come out well for at least 3 more years. may want to find another monitor though. if you would like steps on how to repair, let me know and i will find my old repair threads to give to you.

You need to open it up and inspect the componente inside, look at the fuse and the transistors in the inverter circuits first, also look for sign of over heating on the board, see pictures here for the guide: http://s807.photobucket.com/home/budm/allalbums

Look for shorted out transistors (four, c5706/5707) in the inverter backlight transformer driving circuits.

When turned on, it immediately turns off after about 5 secs. can u help me find solution regarding this? thanks

Sounds like it could be that the lcd is going bad in your monitor. Try hooking up a known working monitor to your computer and if you get the video to stay on then you know the original monitor is bad. If you cant' get the video to stay on even with the known working monitor then you know that the video card inside of the computer is bad.
