Blank Screen and blinking light

When I try to turn on my Dell Inspiron 1501, it seems to be on, but does not boot up, has a black screen and a blinking light that looks like a lock with the letter "A" in it. I don't know what this light represents, and a perusal of the manual doesn't offer hints. Can you help?

- Thanks, Cabletech, I appreciate that answer. It does seem like the battery is not taking charge. When I plug it in, I do not see the power light go on. And when I unplug the power extension, then we are out of business entirely.

Sam. Please be sure that your battery if fully charged before you attempt to turn your system on, if it is then you may need a new battery because it is not holding charge. If these don't work please contact Dell if your system is still under warrenty. If not please let me know.

Hope this work for you.

I was using my laptop when it suddenly froze. Tried ctl/alt/del but nothing happened. So I powered down. When I tried to power it back up, the power light comes on, the lock lights blink twice, the fan powers up then down, and the dvd drive clicks on and off. Then nothing--black screen. My laptop battery is nearly dead, so I am always plugged in.
This seems like a common thing with the Inspirons, and here are some of the suggestions I tried:
I removed all power sources, held down power button for 30 sec to reset system and tried to boot up again--same issue
I unplugged the screen closed sensor, thinking the unit might be thinking it was asleep (lid closed), because that what it acts like. No luck.
Removed memory--and reset--nothing.
Replaced button battery on motherboard, now same problem.

Sam.
I hope that your system is still under warrenty with Dell. if not I recommend that you get a new battery. You can go to pricewatch.com there you can get this battery for a low cost. Please let me know which of these is best for you.
