Question about Marantz PMD660

Err format while recording - 1 hour lost!

I had been recording with the pmd660 for about an hour when an *extremely* noisy truck came by. Suddenly the machine shut off, so I stopped the interview and pressed record again, causing it to start a new track. When I tried to go back to that first track it said "err format" and immediately skipped to the next track (it was in WAV 44.1 format originally).
When I tried to open the tracks on my computer, the first track (the one that ended when the noisy truck came by) was the only one that wouldn't work. It appeared on my computer and seemed to be of the correct size, but when I tried to open it nothing played. I have tried to convert the format on my computer to an MP3, but that does nothing. Is there anyway to recover this lost hour of interview or stop this from happening in the future?

I have almost the exact same problem.

I did not interrupt my recording. I stopped recording, turned off the recorder, unplugged all the mics, turned on the recorder, listened to the first 10 seconds of the recorded track, turned off the recorder, plugged it into my mac, turned it on in USB mode, attempted to transfer the track file, and the track size is "zero kb." I ejected the recorder, turned it off and back on, and now the track says "err format" and skips to the next track.

This seems like a unique problem, as any "data recovery" software will search for deleted files instead of corrupted files. And even if the file is corrupted I have software that can read the raw wav data. However, the filesize is incorrect and obviously doesn't contain any wav data. Shouldn't it be the actual file size? How can I fix this???

Did you ever find a solution to this problem? I have tried new AC adapter cord and it still has background noise. The only time it doesn't is with the batteries.

Hi, I'm having trouble with my marantz recorder. I've reached the 999 track limit, but despite deleting older tracks it still won't let me record. The solution must be something basic I've...

Since you have reached the 999 track limit, it is possible your CF card may have been corrupted.
On page 28 of your manual you should find the instructions for formatting your CF card.
"How to Format a CF Card."
This may get you going again.

Hope this helps.

When I press record, it says Err Card 1. I've tried a new card and formatting. Any ideas?

Sorry to say that it's clear that this Marantz recorders develop this problem over time and Marantz has offered no solutions. When I first purchased this recorder it was enormously reliable and stable, but I find now that it is totally the opposite -- often it has recorded for a while and then suddenly develops an inability to read the SD card and so either quits recording or freezes up.
There seems to be no clear solution to this, and the random nature of the problem makes the recorder wholly unreliable in a live or field setting. This is, sad to say, unacceptable.

I have sony icd-px820 voice recorder and i'll format it through PC and now its show a err call "err format" what can i do plz help me.?

You have to format it as FAT, not FAT32.
Then safely eject it from your system and unplug it. It will say ACCESS for a while and then be back in function.
Good luck.

Unformat

I have a PMD660 as well and from time to time a memory card will become "corrupted". During a recording last evening the battery ran out "prematurely" and when replaced, the 660 had the unformat error. Fortunately the card was readable in my Hummingbird card reader.

Normally when I have had UNFORMAT problems in the past I would just FORMAT the card with the computer and the 660 would then be happy with it. Not this time! The 660 still stubbornly displayed UNFORMAT! This time I ended up having to use Partition Commander to wipe out the partition on the card and then DISK MANAGEMENT in the XP's Computer Management program to re-create the partition and format FAT32. Normally when you FORMAT all data is lost so this would end all hope of recovering data from the card.

In the case of hoping to recover lost recordings I would have tried QUICK FORMAT and then tried to "recover" the data with a program like Partition Magic or Partition Commander or some other program that could re-link the blocks and create directory entries.

Olympus VN-3100PC Voice Recorder Problem

The ERR message can only be corrected by holding in the DISP/MENU and STOP buttons for two seconds, which results in all the material on the recorder being erased. It will say (FOR) for a few minutes while it is erasing everything, then will work again. Solution found at http://www.amazon.co.uk/Olympus-VN-2100-Digital-Recorder-microphone/dp/B000V3NTEU

take out the pins that resemble watch pins! remove the stickey label with the
power switch, usb and 5 volt jack cut outs! If you have taken out the screws needed up to this point and you are a little bit technical this should get you into the unit.

If you don't have the skill, hire it out. Joe Taken
