I am having trouble simplifying ratios on the FX-83ES. Any ideas? For example 10:5 should come up... (More) I am having trouble simplifying ratios on the FX-83ES. Any ideas? For example 10:5 should come up with 2:1, but it comes up with 10 when I press =.

A ratio can be simplified by dividing both sides of the ratio by the Highest Common Factor (HCF). The highest common factor is the largest number that goes into both numbers of your ratio. In example 1 you are asked to simplify the ratio 6:8. Here the HCF is 2 so divide both sides of the ratio by 2 to give 3:4.

If you enter the ratios using the fraction entry key ( [a b/c] the results will be displayed as fractions. And when the calculator displays fractions they are always in their reduced form.

In general, when you are manipulating fractions ( Pi/2 is no a fraction even if you write it as one) you can try to simplify them by looking for the greatest common factor (GCF) of the numerator and denominator. When you simplify by the GCF the fraction that is left is in its reduced form.

Sorry the calculator handles fractions but not radicals. You may be interested in the newer Casios FX-115ES, or FX-991ES, (Natural display).

*It handles a lof more that radical and fractions*.
