Question about Televison & Video

1 Answer

My Philips 42" plasma t.v. Model 42PF9630A/37 worked fine when I shut it off one day and the next time I turned it on the screen was filled with hundreds of black and white lines that stretch horizontally across the whole screen. You can still see the menu screens and picture but they are affected by the 'static' that dominates the screen. I have pictures of the screen that I can easily forward since describing it accurately in writing is impossible. I recently posted this problem on this site and was instructed to download and install the most recent firmware from Philips, which I did, but it didn't fix the problem. I took the back cover off and located several boards with solid green LED lights glowing on them. One board (LJ41=03387A) labeled as a logic board, has two green LED's, both were solid green prior to the screen mishap. Now one is solid and the other now blinks. Was thinking that maybe it is blinking to point out a faiure of some type. Please advise.

That is no firmware problem. Firmware is just the program that logically controls the tv (Preset, tuner control etc.). Snow on a plasma is almost for sure wrong voltage supplied to plasma screen (Volts too high). this will cause dots on screen with a kind of snow effect, while you still get raster.

The problem is fixed testing voltages, and doing service procedure from manual. When this does not fix the problem, then Sustain boards, buffers, AV input board, and digital controller board can cause the problem. Parts must be tested to find the problem.
On Philips plasma TVs the service procedure is different depending on the model. Therefore the service manual for specific model is needed.

Parts and service manual can be ordered here.

Hello,

Your power supply board is dead, u know basic electronics' and soldering? Most of the times, the power supply board just have dead leakages gases capacitors. These capacitors always bulges up on it top,or puff up on it top.Replaced these gases leakages capacitors will get your TV power stable, and work again.Or tries websites like Shopjimmy.com,Ebay.com to buy a whole refurbish power supply board for the replacement.

I hope this will help to solve the problem....

I HAVE A PHILLIPS 42'' PLASMA 42PF9630A-37

The only thing I can suggest outside of taking the television to get repaired is a hail-mary firmware update. To be honest, the firmware update process is fairly complicated and lengthy. You can download the firmware and find instructions for it here.

http://www.p4c.philips.com/cgi-bin/cpindex.pl?ctn=42PF9630A/37&scy=US&slg=AEN

Look on the right hand side for firmware information.

This TV is likely outside of its 1 year manufacturer's warranty so you would have to pay any and all repairs. Before deciding to do a repair you might try calling Philips. For a while they were offering a service to customers like yourself with out of warranty units. They would offer to sell you a more up to date model at a discount. I'm not sure they still do this but its worth a shot.

Hope that helps!

THE MENU KEEPS POPPING UP ON THE SCREEN CONTINOUSLY ON MY 42 INCH

I had an LG 37" LCD that did this to me. Turned out to be bad solder joints on the side button board. Just reflowed and it starting working fine.

But now that I think about, I had another set do the same thing, only it wasn't the button board. I had to upgrade the TV's firmware via the USB service port. Just needed a USB flash drive and downloaded the firmware from the mfg's website. There were easy to follow instructions there too!

Philips Plasma won't upgrade firmware.

You need to copy the autorun.upg file from the sub folder to the root directory of the zip drive. I had the same problem and it worked after I did this.

I have a Philips plasma 42 with black lines across the screen

I would first check if there is an available firmware upgrade for your model .Upgrade requires you to download firmware from philips website. Then transfer it to a memory stick .Then use a memory stick reader to plug into tv for firmware upgrade.Other wise the set would probably need repair .Possible a bad SSB board or another issue
