Question about Televison & Video

2 Answers

Vizio L37 has couple of sound and channel capture problems which are irritating as heck (I am connected to an extenal antenna and use DTV): Following sound problems happens whether on TV speakers or through sterio and if I use a converter box through analog circuts instead of DTV, problems are minimised but don't go away: 1. The video lags behind the sound up to a few seconds and happends inconsistantly across various stations, 2. Occationally video catches up to the sound, but then the video will start a consistant split second freeze/skip (happens a lot on stong signal PBS channel, sound stays ok), 3. accross all channels the volume will Occationally decreses or fad and will return to the original volume if I switch to another station then back to the original station, Video Capture problem (DTV only): 4. Once in a while, I will loose the station, the TV skips ahead through all channels, but when I go back to the original staion, it is no longer there and is no longer a captured/scanned staion, I have to run the Auto or Manual Scan again (signal strength checks out fine on original station after recapture).

    Thanks ginko…

for your prompt answer. I acquired this TV from a friend, and using your service I was able to repair it by replacing the main logic and the digital tuning PCBs. I made sure the parts matched exactly.

I was not pleased in total with you’re answer to the sound issues (not you’re fault). I was aware that over-the-air signals have their issues and can be the cause by poor station processing, but I live in Phoenix where the transmitters are line-of-sight (on top of a mountain) with my external hy-gain antenna tuned, and I only have these problems with the high powered and high signal strength stations, while the week stations of low signal strength and power (and not line-of-site by the way) DO NOT have these sound problems. The sound issues CAN NOT all be station processing integrity.

Point in question: I learned (using you’re service when I repaired this TV last spring) that the sound syncing circuits are handled separately on the respective signal boards (logic (analog) and digital). If this be true, how is the AV signal board doing this to the digital signal when the digital antenna signal is not connected to this board? Please clarify.

If you are saying the digital board is suspect, then I received a defective digital board from the vendor. Unfortunately I bought the digital tuning board a while ago and can’t return it. , At first (keeping in mind the over-the-air signal issues) I was not sure these problems were with station transmission integrity or the digital board. These issues seemed to be there from the first I put in the board, but the problems persisted and seemed to get worse.

Your answer to the capture loss (No. 4) dose makes more sense. The latter answer is true; the internal TV tuner is loosing the preset.

Looks like I need another digital board to correct most of these issues. :( :(

Please answer the above questioned issue with the AV board, and/or share any other thoughts?

    Thanks again, nickynooner

It is not just one thing. All the stations are changing digital signals from the UHF frequency band to the VHF band as they cut their analog signals . All full-power stations have now shut down their analog signals. Some low-power stations and rural relays known as "translators" are still broadcasting in analog.

Even if you have been receiving an acceptable analog picture at your location, unless your digital signal level is above a certain threshhold, you'll either see no picture at all — or it will be "blocky" and unwatchable. You may need to employ an extra length of cable to get the needed positional flexibility. Use a simple coaxial "barrel" connector (available at electronics stores) to link the two cables, but don't use an extension that's longer than necessary; every foot of cable diminishes the signal strength.

You have an externatl antenna and dtv converter? Do you have a digital antenna. and if so where is it located. The Attic seems to be a good place for it. Out of the way and it can go through the plywood and shingles.

I know this is a lot to have thrown at you. But it is not an uncommon issue. The signal towers do not have full coverage. some places are better than others. Some people have a better horizon of reception and their dish is angle an inch in the right direction.

It is a shame, but you can get basic digital cable in some places for $30.00. Short of getting cable, this will be a problem.

I am sorry that this is probably not what you were hoping to hear, I know. I hope the information has helped you understand what is going on. If you have any other question on your question or my answer, please leave me a comment.. I will do my best to help you out...

I will try to answer to your question.

1. The video lags behind the sound up to a few seconds and happends inconsistantly across various stations.

Tis may be a reception problem, if reception is poor you may get this problem with both external receiver box or aerial connected directly internal tuner.

2. Occationally video catches up to the sound, but then the video will start a consistant split second freeze/skip (happens a lot on stong signal PBS channel, sound stays ok).

Same as above. Pixelation, green lines and picture freezing, splitting etc. are symptom of bad digital streaming signal. This can depend on reception. If reception is good, this looks more like a fault.

3. accross all channels the volume will Occationally decreses or fad and will return to the original volume if I switch to another station then back to the original station, Video Capture problem (DTV only): 4. Once in a while, I will loose the station, the TV skips ahead through all channels, but when I go back to the original staion, it is no longer there and is no longer a captured/scanned staion, I have to run the Auto or Manual Scan again.

If the TV is just losing signal, and channel is re-appearing after a while, then it is same problem as above. If the TV is loosing preset and channel settings in NVRAM, this is an additional problem concerning the digital tuner built inside your TV. If this happen using external tuner box, and it happens on single channel, then tuner box is faulty.

In conclusion, it looks like the Set is faulty. First two problems address either the AV signal board or the tuner board. Third problem , if this is happening when using no external receiver, can be caused by a faulty tuner board.
The fault you are describing is not common, and may be considered a factory defect. As a first step, better contacting manufacturer and asking if they can cover repair cost.

Here the parts. Since you did not give full model number, first call seller to ensure parts are the right ones for your unit.Parts are for L32HDTV10A. Parts must be tested before replacement:

TUNER BOARD 3320-0012-0187 VIZIO L32HDTV10A SIDE AV INPUT 3320-0062-0146 from VIZIO L32HDTV10A
Please, do not forget to leave feedback.

Many thanks.

Will only scan 21 channels with cable and no box

If all else fails go into the menu and look for the setup--it sounds like you may have the set set to air/antenna instead of catv/cable as this would account for only 21 channels being picked up.

Digital changeover

You need to set both the converter (I assume you are using one) and TV to the same (analog) channel (3 or 4). Remember, the analog channels from 2-14 exist no more; they are inactive (as of 12 June, 2009) and will be reassigned to other services. BTW, your former VHF antenna is useless; all of the new digital channels are UHF only.

Playing vcr causes new digital tv to lose saved channels

Vizio representative suggested connecting antenna directly to TV and not through the VCR. In doing this, we lose the ability to record on the VCR but we record elsewhere and watch downstairs. The problem is solved on losing channels. I must add that we watch and record on a Sharp digital TV upstairs and do not lose channels. I don't know why the VCR had this effect on this Vizio TV.

Sound of My Vizio L37

I know thier are some hidden sound settings in the menu if you hit your menu key on your remote [or the one on the side of your tv],then goto to the tv and press both the channel up and down buttons simultaneously. You will see a factor menu, try changing the sound settings in there.
