Sound but no picture Philips 42PFL9632D/79

The Philips 42PFL9632C/79 has sound but no picture. Never done this before, only when I tried to turn it on. The Ambilight works, but there is no picture - even the menus do not show up either by using the remote control or the buttons on the side of the TV

I had the same problem, no picture, contacted Philips who put me on to NESN (0845 610 4105) for local agent, they diognosed a falty "Inverter Board" all costs will be £365as the set is only 18 months old Philips are looking into some compensation towards the costs. I await there reply. Looking at several web sites worldwide this seems to be a problem with this set between 12 & 24 months old.

You need to change a ciruit board. Too much power goes thru and blows the inverter. I've had mine changed twice. Philips are aware of the problem. They tried fixing it by putting a diode on the new board to no avail and now the second time they have added a ressistor to reduce the amount of power going thru. I hope it works.

My 42pfl9632d had the same problem. The inverter was the problem. It was replaced without costs. Philips acknowledged this model has this issue and has an unlimited warranty on the inverters. Mine was fixed on February 2 2011.

Mine did the same on christmas eve 2009 i emailed philips support and they replied as below

Dear Mr. Forde,

Thank you for your recent e-mail.

I am sorry to hear that you are experiencing a problem with your television.

It is difficult for me to determine the cause of the problem based on the information you have provided in your e-mail. I would like to offer some troubleshooting techniques you can try in order to resolve the problem yourself.

If you are watching programmes via an external set-top box such as Sky, Virgin Media or a similar service you may need to check the cable is firmly inserted into the television and the external set-top box. If you are using a scart cable you may need to replace it as scart cables can easily become damaged. If you are using a HDMI cable I suggest that you connect the cable to another HDMI socket to see if the problem persists.

If you are watching terrestrial programmes via the aerial connection I would suggest that you switch off the television at the mains supply for approximately 1 hour before trying again.

If the problem persists after attempting these troubleshooting steps your television may have a fault which would need to be inspected by a qualified service engineer.

The information in your e-mail shows that your television is no longer covered by the 12 months warranty. Unless it is covered by extended warranty I regret to inform you that you will be responsible to pay for the television to be inspected and repaired.

Philips has made arrangements with a network of local registered service engineers who can inspect the television for you. In order to arrange for your television to be inspected please call MF Services on 021 43 48 988 who can provide you with contact details in Ireland.

I hope then that you are able to resolve this matter.

I trust that the information provided will be of assistance.

Should you require any further information please contact our Customer Care Centre (details below) quoting customer reference number 50-496599157.

Kind regards,

Screen is black but we have sound

The problem is a faulty inverter kit (2 boards).
I live in the Netherlands and had it twice, tv is 2 and a half years old! In the Netherlands Philips replaces the inverterkit without any
costs for the consumer (even after warranty time) cause they have
admitted that it is a production fault.Philips made a new inverterkit
which should solve the problem indefenit.Be sure the kit is Version
1.3! I had 1.2 after the first problem, and that went wrong after 7 months again. Today got revision1.3 installed which is Philips final solution.
