Question about Bose 901 VI Main / Stereo Speaker

Can an Ipod dock be separated from the Bose system and replaced?

Because Ipod dock can be separated from speaker, can I buy replacement dock? I spent 300 dollars a few years ago(2) and don't want to throw it in the trash if it is fixable. It's the black model speaker dock. When the ipod is placed on the dock, it leans back. I used to be able to insert a thin item like the ipod carrying case between the docked Ipod and the Bose speaker system behind it, but that no longer works. Is it possible to buy a replacement dock?
Thank you.

Perhaps I am not making myself clear. On the Bose ipod speaker system that retails for 300$, there exists a small semi-circular platform in front of the speaker. This small platform contains the apparatus to which you attach the ipod. It is this small piece that seems incapable of holding a connection to the an ipod that is placed on it. The ipod bends backward. The platform does not "easily lift out", as one expert suggested. It has 3 screws
and looks fairly complicated on the interior. My question is this: is there an easier fix than sending the thing back to Bose to have a whole new platform attached?

I'm a techno-idiot, and even I understand this answer. Furthermore, I may even be able to implement it. I'll just have to accept the hoots I suspect I will get. If I understand the answer correctly, I'll have and extra wire or two hanging around. Maybe I'll stick a plant in front of it. Plants like music. Thank you.

There is a solderless way to hack an aux input for the Sounddock.
(1)Go to Wal-mart (or elsewhere) and buy the Griffin Dock Adapter for iPod Shuffle (~$20) and a Belkin Speaker and Headphone splitter (~$4). (The Belkin splitter is needed in order to fit properly over the Shuffle plug on the device, but other cables/adapters might work.)
(2)Remove the existing adapter plate and replace it with the Dock adapter.
(3) Set the switch to speaker. (Very Important!) (4)Plug in one end of the Belkin adapter and you are ready to go! Any input signal automatically activates the Sounddock. Now you have a fully functional female and male stereo headphone input for your Sounddock. You just need an aux cable to hook up the ipod
–>Total cost ~$25 and no soldering required.

It should just easily be lifted out of the docking station

you can buy a replacement bose docking station although they are abit pricey. altec lansing offers a docking station at a considerable savings tho i cannot attest to the sound quality of either.

here is a price comparison http://www.amazon.com/Bose-SoundDock-digital-music-system/dp/B0006VX1G8 you may be able to buy it cheaper then is shown.

The only option is go to www.bose.com and contact customer support and the parts department to see if they have available parts for your item.

Are you using a voltage adapter of some kind to convert the ireland standard 220VAC to the USA standard 120VAC that this device uses? Over voltage can deplete an electronics life very quickly.
By the sound of the "thump-thump-thump" noise emitting from the device, you may have a broken ipod dock connector, or a short somewhere in the connector/wiring/device itself, or the ground has failed.
By the description of having to "tweak" your ipod to hear it, it sounds like you've slowly broken the dock connector. Check to see if it moves easily, or if you can hear anything loose.
This is more than likely fixable, but it's probably easier to replace the device than to fix a broken connector.

I just bought the ipod nano 6th generation and it will not charge in the Bose docking system....my old one charges with no problem.....is there a fix for this? The nano plays fine it just wont charge

If it is a different model iPod then it is likely the Bose dock does not support the newer model. Quite often changes such as from iPhone 3 to iPhone 4, Bose had to release a new dock. The speakers and music will still always work, but the support will be limited for charging. Unfortunately you will not be able to fix this, other than upgrade the dock, or go back to your old ipod.

Not likely unless your really good with soldering irons and superglue or it is COMPLETLY seperate (In other works the dock fully seperates from the speakers) then you might be able to order a new dock piece

Turn the sound dock over and you will see the connection for the iPod is on a separate piece of plastic, almost looks like it has been bolted onto the main bit. It means a connection will be loose between these two parts in some way. Contact Bose to get this serviced.

They both use the same speakers, my personal opinion deems they are both the same. However the second SoundDock charges via USB pin, so it is future proof for future iPods.

Ipod nano

The dock connectors on most of the speaker systems available are cheap and break easily. I have experienced the same problems. if the ipod doesn't sit just right then it doesn't connect. why they seem to charge but not send music signals i'm not sure. highly unlikely that it's your ipod. either buy a good speaker dock (klipsch, bose, sonic impact... check amazon or e-bay for good deals) or use the headphone jack to connect to the speaker dock you have, and use the wall charger to supply power/charge your ipod.
