We put disc in to console, and memory card screen comes up (telling us that there is no disk). Also the disc is not spinning. Can you give us any advice as to what could be wrong with it? Are we able to fix it, or should I take it to be professionally repaired?

I have read that some manufacture PS1 memory cards will not work properly on the PS2. I would suggest trying another PS2 to see if it's a problem with your specific PS2. If the memory card doesn't pop up on the browser screen of another PS2, it could be defective or incompatible. If it does work on another PS2, it could be something weird going on with your memory card slot on your PS2.
Try blowing on the little disk reader first, then try wiping the disk reader with a clean cotton shirt. Put the disk in, and listen if the disk spins, if it doesn't it can be one of 2 things. -if disk doesn't spin 1) the sensor that sensors whether the latch is open(check youtube for bypass) 2)the spin motor is broke (throw out the ps2, and get a new 1)
I have had this problem numerous times. It's a glitch in the game, best I can figure. It corrupts your saved game. You might be able to go back to an earlier save and play from there. But the best solution, if that doesn't work, is to take out the game disc, turn on the ps2, click on Browse (with your memory card plugged in) and delete the Vice City file(s) on there. Then put your disc back in and start over from the beginning. It sucks, I know. I've had to do it. And once I was almost to a 100% completion. Bleh. =( Sorry.
When you installing PS2 HardDrive with Network adapter you'll need HD
Loader Disc (you can find it with a bit of googling) to execute game although elf applications from the
harddrive. but if the laser lens of your ps2 can't reading a disc you will need installing a modchips such as infinity. Modchip like this will launching BOOT.elf on memory card during boot of PS2. see here http://e-arena.blogspot.com/2007/04/boot-up-ps2-hdd-via-memory-card.html for giude. hopefully this helps.
what may have happened is that the saved files for GT4 on your memory card have now become corrupt, and the disk when put in the suysstem is trying to read the data from the card, simply deleting your saved GT4 data from the memory card should allow the disk to play as normal.
