Question about Maxtor Personal Storage 3100 (M01B080) 80 GB Hard Drive

1 Answer

My 100gb Maxtor 3100 suddenly went offline

Thought it might be the cable as the power light is still on, and the hd is still running ok. Not recognized, though, by XP Pro.
Since no driver given for XP as 'slave' hd, what do I do now?
It actually quit on me while running the main drive! suddenly disappeared. If not the cable, or the hd (only two years old) could it be a MS update? this goes on constantly on this drive.

Also have done all the usual, unplugged and replugged after a wait to check on static, etc.

thanks in advance

it's an external drive, and it just disappeared from my computer. It doesn't show up in either bios or windows.
What was weird was that it went offline while I was using it on the computer, one of the reasons I thought it could be the cable as the power light is still coming on, and the drive still rotates in it's box...

Did you attach a USB device not having the software installed in advance ? This can also happen while recovering XP, having the USB devices still connected, as the drivers have been removed.

Is this an internal hard drive? When you say it disapeared do you mean in windows or in the bios?

If this is happeing consistently it is usually the drive itself, the data cable or the controller on the motherboard. Try reconnecting the drive to the controller and cable for your DVD/CD drive.

Leave the DVD disconnected while trying this test. If this works and the maxtor doesn't work on the primary cable as a slave, then try switching cables and see if the problem moves to the DVD.

If neither of these works the fault is in the drive, if it works on the DVD cable on both channels, the problem is in the cable, you can buy a replacement for $2-$5. If it works on the DVD cable alone but not when you move the DVD cable onto the primary channel with the boot drive the problem is likely a failing controller on the motherboard, although this signals worse things to come for the motherboard you can move the maxtor to the slave position on the DVD cable for the time being.

Worst case, if this is a drive with crucial data and it turns out the drive is at fault, if it still works intermittently, back up any data to CD/DVD or external drive before it gives up the ghost, if you can't keep it running that long and need a pro to get your data back, reply with your Country, State and City and I'll refer you to an appropriate facility.

Hope this helps FixYa,

    Thanks for the clarification.

In that case as it is getting power and spinning, the easiest things to do are try it on a different computer, if it works there the issue is likely with the software or driver on your computer. If that doesn't work take the drive to your local PC shop and have the techs transfer the 100gb hard drive into a new enclosure. If it works in the new enclosure, but it and you're done. If it doesn't work in the new enclosure then the drive itself is damaged.

If the drive is damaged and you don't have any data on it that you can't live without simply buy a new one. If the drive is dead and has important files on it that you don't have backed up anywhere else you will need the help of a data recovery pro. As with the above answer, if you need the help of a pro reply back with your location and I will be happy to provide you with a referral.

Assuming this is a USB external HDD...try, if you haven't already, using one of the USB inputs in the back of the computer. When I try mine in the front, it does not work. When I tried the rear, it worked.

My Maxtor personal storage 3100 clicking and not recognised

If you can hear mechanical sounds from the case the problem is in the hard disk and moving it to your laptop isn't the solution. In that case check for a data recovery company at your area as sooner as posible. If the sound is no mechanical I'll tell you the way to move the HD. Describe me the kind of sound.

My Maxtor 3100 no longer powers up. Any ideas for

Have you checked the Power Adapter of the Maxtor 3100?
- If the Power Adapter is defective and won't give power try to change the power adapter with the same specs.
- If the power adapter is good, then the board in your maxtor 3100 is defective.
- Now buy new enclosure for your Maxtor 3100 because the HDD in it is IDE.

Drive powers up but will no longer be recognized by my computer. Drive activity light does not flash.

Sound the interface cable going to the drive. Replace the cable, they are usually resoanable price.
