Question about Sony STR-DE845 Receiver

1 Answer

Audio very low, even when turning volume knob up over half way.

Ever since a power outage, my receiver is extremely low. I can barely hear anything when I record video through it or even when I have it on. Alot of background hissing. I tried resetting but no change. It is connect to a surge protector and all other components are operating fine.

You have a damaged audio selector chip in your amps input stages. Can be easily checked. they are stereo down each side with many inputs a few outputs. Sometimes are marked. Check with osc scope or signal sniffer. you may have to replace more than one. they share a common clock and serial data lines so operation of one can effect many

The volume is barely audible even with it turned all the way up. I have tried different audio cables. It occurs in different modes also, CD Tuner, etc.

Maybe you have it muted or a Tape Monitor engaged??? Never troubleshoot anything at high volume. If you can't hear it at medium it's effectively noth there. A flip of a misplaced switch would possibly blow your speakers.

Why do the volume numbers on old receivers start

This type of calibartion is known as a logarithmic scale.
The numbers refer to decibels below the maximum output of the amplifier section of the reciever, or decibels of attenuation (making smaller/quieter).

Without going through logarithim theorey, the logarithim (base 10) of 1 is 0. So if 1 is the maximum output of the amp, as you turn the knob down from maximum you are adding more and more attentuation to the output (relative to maximum) and so the loudness of what you hear goes down, even though the number on the scale is going up !

Most peolpe associate decibels with sound levels, but anything can be measured in decibels, so long as there is soemthing to reference it against.

Can barely hear anything of any audio but device manager says audio device working

Right click your volume icon in notification area and adjust volume settings in there. Try headphones and see if its still the same, in case its your actual speakers going bad.

FM plays extremely low volume

Two things to check:

1) Verify that the tape monitor switch is not on. If it is on you hearing crosstalk only.

2) Verify that the unit has a jumper wire from pre-amp out to Amp-in, if your unit has it.

If neither of the above are the problem, please post the make and model and further details will be provided.

Thanks,
Dan
