There is no one blanket answer to this problem that could have many causes. It could be the DLNA server on the linkstation, it could be the version of the firmware on the PS3 or it could be the files that you have on the linkstation, BUT this link on the sony forum touches on some of these and offers some solutions http://boardsus.playstation.com/t5/PlayStation-3-Media/My-Buffalo-LinkStation-experience-so-far/m-p/29300220 However most people seem to install something called twonky server, which i am planning to do...... hope this gets you started. Stream Sony XR550 AVCHD from PC to Panasonic TC-P50G25 via DLNA with PS3

PS3 DLNA Video-Play MTS/M2TS Videos from Computer to Non-DLNA TV with PlayStation 3
Full Guide to Setup Windows 7 for PS3 with DLNA Streaming to HDTV

The HDTV in my living room is non-DLNA compliant. It is the 50-inch Panasonic VIERA TC-P50G25 Plasma HDTV. Even though my PC is running Windows 7 with WMP 12, the videos could not be streamed to the Plasma TV via DLNA. It is quite inconvenient for home sharing.

When looking for the solution for playing videos from PC to non-DLNA TV, I got to know that I could download my Sony XR550 videos from camcorder to PC, connect PlayStation 3 to HDTV via HDMI cable as the media player - Stream Sony AVCHD from PC to Panasonic via DLNA with PS3. The PS3 is generally used as game console. I also use Aunsoft Final Mate to join the AVCHD files from my XR550 to manage the clips for certain occasion and events.

The first thing I do is to make sure PS3 can read the videos from PC. As Windows 7 is DLNA compliant, I just need to make sure the "Windows Media Player Sharing Service" is enabled automatically. Get the clips to the shared folder for video.

Note: The "Windows Media Player Sharing Service" is available in the Service section. Just right-click on My Computer > Manage > Services and Applications > Services, and you can find "Windows Media Player Sharing Service".

Wait for a while, and PS3 would read the video files from PC. Then for playing AVCHD files flawlessly via DLNA with PS3, we join clips from Sony XR550 into one large file. Run Aunsoft Final Mate, and go to the Resource tab to browse the folder with the .mts files from XR550. Click the Create New Movie button, drag and drop files from Resource tab to the movie ID. Click the Export button and the files will be joined seamlessly for DLNA sharing.

Tips:
If the PS3 does not display the PC as source folder, we shall allow the access to Windows 7 as media server.

Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center > Change Advance Sharing Settings, and you would face the window like below:

Make sure the "Network discovery" and "File sharing" are selected as turn on. Go to the Media streaming section and click "Choose media streaming options..." to make sure you allow PS3 for streaming. View media from your computer to your PS3

What you need:
Windows (XP-7)
A recent router system
Internet cords
PS3(obviously)
Television
Surround Sound system (optional)

Make sure all your connections are in. You can do this wireless, but the picture will be choppy. If your router is 2 feet away from the PS3 then no problem.
Go into your PS3 settings and enable ATRAC, WMA playback and Media Server connection. Leave the PS3 on.
Go to your computer and go here to download PS3 Media Server.
Once installed, go into Navigation/Share Settings. The default is "all", but if you want to only specify certain folders, click on the "+".

A matter of CPU. If you only have one, only playback files if they are 7-900Mb, anything more and your CPU will be struggling to send the data.
2+ cores and you can playback files as large as 4Gb-20Gb.

The PS3 is compatible with a wide range of files like MKV, AVI, M2TS and WMA.

You can even enjoy your music and edit photos. Turning your gaming system into a media entertainment centre.

I can only speak for WinXP Service Pack 3 and Windows 7 build 7100. For me the program worked flawlessly. Handling full 5.1 Digital surround sound.
The settings were fine on the Media Server, not having to change a thing.
I haven't experienced any trouble with the software and I have been using it for 4 months now.

Ps3 says dnla problem and won't play any thing what do i do

Hi ericparvin,

Since you haven't specify what it is you are trying to do or play, I'm assuming from the error that you are getting, maybe you are trying to stream your media to your PS3. if that is the case, reboot your PC or source system then reboot your PS3 console as well.

Since PS3 has playback limitations, what I usually recommend is the PS3 Media Server, you can get it here:

code.google.com/p/ps3mediaserver/

just download the latest version then install it on your PC, run it. it will automatically search for the PS3 console on the network, once found. go to the PS3 XMB and look for PS3 Media Server Icon. it will even encode mkv files but you need a beef up system.

Hope that helps, if you still have problems post here.

Regards,
Ragoney

My PS3 doesn't recognise the linkstation???

Hi,

Welcome to Fixya. if your External drive is not detected by your Ps3 console you need to format it and select Fat32 File system. Ps3 will not recognize external harddrive using NTFS Format make sure you format the drive using Windows XP or Windows 7. Windows Vista dont have Fat32 but Exfat File format. After you format the drive to Fat32 make sure you create a folder like Music, Photo, Video and other forlders so that it will be detected by your console.

Thanks for using Fixya.

All I want to do is run the playstation thru my computer. Do I have to connect it to the internet to do that?

not internet but your home network.
i'm not sure you can use your playstation through your computer. but you can access your pictures, music, videos that is stored on your computer from your ps3. if you have the latest version of windows media player it makes it easier.

Using Windows Media Player 11 as the server
Open Windows Media Player 11
From the toolbar, select Library then Media Sharing
Check "Share my media"
On the PS3 - Under Video, Photos or Music, select "Scan for media server"
Go back to the PC, and you should see a pop up showing an unknown device trying to connect.
Allow the device, and everything should work.

I stream without any problems using the PS3 Media Server, free bit of software that you can d/load and install on your laptop (just google it, i found it within seconds).

Really simple to use, just add the folder where your videos are then you can access via the PS3 dashboard

I am trying to set up my laptop as a wireless network with a ps3

Do you mean that you're trying to enable such things as file transfers with the PS3 over a Wireless network?

Well the PS3 isn't capable of full file sharing with a PC. However, you can set up a windows media server and if setup correctly the PS3 can actually play and download MP3's, Videos, and Pictures from that service.

Setting up a windows media server isn't really difficult, you've just got to set it up over your network. It's all in the PC, and the best idea is to use the Windows Live service to find the exact procedure of setting it up for your system. You can also download any needed software through that service as well.

I hope this helps you out bud. Personally I wish it would work the other way as well. I'd like to have the ability to back up my save games and system data on my PC.

PS3

Hi there,

You will need a ethernet cable, this can be done aswell through wireless, all you have to do is install windows media player 11 or above, then search for media servers on your ps3 and the ps3 will find it, voila,,, any photos, videos, music etc..... can now be accessed through your ps3, if not wireless connect ethernet cable to your ps3 or modem/router for online gaming but not for accessing your pc files.
