Question about Shimano Cycling

I have a shimano tourney deraileur with sis index. what does the small adjustable screw which is off by itself adjust. the other two screws are for the upper and lower gear stops.

Is it a long screw running into the derailleur hanger? This sets the distance from the cassette to the jockey wheel. You use it to pull the jockey wheel away from the large cassette cog if the chain is having trouble clearing it. You'll know if it is happening because the bike will be making more noise in the low gear and it will sometimes want to skip out of gear.

I have replaced the cable on the 7speed Shimano SIS derailler and Ithink I ran the cacle through the shifter wrong. I can only get three gears to shift. This is a combo brake and shifter handlebar mount.


Hi,

All shimano derailleurs have two small screws located on the mechanism itself that allow you to adjust the position of the derailleur relative to the gears. The top one adhusts how far towards the wheel the chain can go and the bottom of the two adjusts how far towards the stop it goes.

Put the bike on a stand or just prop it up so the rear wheel can spin freely when you turn the pedals by hand

Put the shifter in the highest gear and turn the pedals, the adjust the top screw until it enters the top gear, you may need to adjust the cable tension also to do this.

Once you have it going easily into and out of the top gear adjust the bottom screw so that it easily goes into the bottom gear.

You should be done! Don't forget that for the first few rides the cable will stretch out a little so you may need to tinker with those screws a couple more times.

I would like advice on adjusting the rear derailleurs on my Campag Record long cage set. I am very much an amateur, and am not sure which screw/nut to turn and by how much. Thank you.


ok...there are usually 2 screws,one above the other.The top screw normally adjusts the deraileur so that the deraileur does not touch the spokes.the bottom screw usually adjusts the derailer so that it does not go past the smallest sprocket.One way to adjust eg(incase you have clicking sounds as you pedal) is to put the deraileur into the smallest sprocket at the back end.Flip the bike upside down so it sits on the seat and handlebars.Now get right behind the deraileur and see if the deraileur is in line with the smallest sprocket.If it is not in line,then slowly pedal the bike and adjust the screw inwards until you hear no more clicking.If you cannot get into the smallest sprocket,then,turn the screw outwards while still turning the pedals.The deraileur will slowly move outwards until it jumps into the small sprocket and no clicking sound .Vice versa for the top screw.good luck.let me no how you get on

I bought a mountain bike with Shimano Altus gears over the net with most of the assembly in place. Have indexed the rear gears which work fine. Did the same for the front deraileur works changing up but...


There are a couple of possible problems. You can try backing off the cable tension a little bit at the shifter and running back and forth through the gears adjusting as you go till it hits 2nd coming down.You can also try backing off the High limit screw on the derailleur. This will allow the shift to start a little farther from the bike hopefully hit 2nd. Hope this helps.

How do i adjust the tension on the cables which control the triple chainring [ shimano 515 ]gearing and the rear gearing? presumably there will be other adjustements to make after this is done.


The tension on a derailleur cable is determined by a spring in the derailleur itself, and is generally not adjustable. The available adjustments on the derailleur control the limits to it's travel (and in the case of the rear deraileur, the chain tension). The shift levers that you operate to change gears generally have an adjustable resistance (to keep them from sliding into another position), but this has zero effect on the tension on the cables. If you have indexing shifters there are additional adjustments. If your cables are going slack it might seem that the spring in the derailleur is too weak, but this is a lubrication issue, or you may need to replace your cables. Your bike needs to have the derailers adjuster. If It was bought at a bike shop, take it back and have them adjust it. If it was bought at Wal-Mart, Fred Meyers, or any other chain store, don't waste your time going back, they don't support what they sell. Find a local bike shop and have them do the adjustments AND have them show you how to do it your self. Yes, it will cost money to do this. You could go online to shimano's web site and find the directions on adjusting the derailers, but if you do that and make the problem worse, you will find yourself at the bike shop having them take care of it. I would start at the bike shop, they may offer a free class on bike maintenance as well.

Shimano Tourney rear derailleur is stuck on smallest gear and will not shift. How do I adjust the tension correctly?


There are several things that could be wrong. You could have thrown your chain (you couldn't ride at all if so). The bike could have been crashed and the derailleur bent. The cable might have slipped where it bolts to the derailleur. Or the cable or shifter could need maintenance, too. It is most likely one of the above. If it is only the adjustment, there are two stop screws on the derailleur that can be adjusted.

My best advice for you is to either find a bicycle repair manual at a local bookstore or your library that can show you some of the detail. Or just let your local bike shop do the repair.

On my bike with shimano ultegra shifters and 105 front deraileur, I can't shift onto the big chainring. The deraileur is not at the stop, but I can't move it any farther. How do I fix that.


Try this first:
Shift into the little ring and release the cable. Pull it tight (with pliers) and re-tighten the cable. It should shift now. If it doesn't, the solution is a little time consuming, so i apologize in advance.
First, flip your bike onto the bars and saddle. Now shift into the small chainring and your lowest cassette cog (the largest in number of teeth). Release the cable from the front derailleur and set the adjustment knob for the front derailleur to its center point. You should find it on your down tube. Now adjust the "L" setting on the derailleur while turning the crank so that its stop sets it in a position where it just skims the chain but does not touch it. Now pull the cable taut and re-clamp the cable. Shift into the middle ring and shift the rear derailleur to its highest and lowest gears, making sure the chain does not rub the front derailleur. If it does rub (it will be in either the lowest or highest cog on the cassette), adjust the front derailleur by way of the adjustment knob to clear the rub. Then shift into the big ring and you should have no problem. Set the "H" stop if necessary.

okay start with the deraileur in the smallest gear if it wont loosen cable and screw with the letter h by it if you cant see letter just loosen the one that lets it move out only go until its in high gear then making sure its shifted to high gear tighten cable slowly shift to low gear when it reaches low tighten small screw you havent adjusted yet to keep deraileur from going into spokes
