Question about Kenmore 64254 / 64252 / 64259 Top Freezer Refrigerator

Loud banging noise

My ref has been making a loud baning noise for quite some time. It happens when it cycles off. I have taken the back off and when i move the compressor a little it makes the banging noise and feels like there is something loose inside the compressor. Is there any way to fix this?

Hi - I have a new top mount Kenmore refrigerator (model number starts with 253) - bought 3 months ago. Ever since I got it, it makes a knocking or a popping sound every time it cycles on - it only lasts for a few seconds. A repairman came out last week and told me this is normal. It's the "new technology" of all refrigerators, and basically all new refrigerators have this sound (though I wonder if that's true). He said that the cooling tube going up into the freezer is very small, like a cocktail straw, and that the compression/expansion process going through this tube makes this sound. He wrapped the cap tube on the evaporator with rubber tape to reduce the noise, though he said that may not work. It did work on the first cycle, but the noise is back. I also called Sears yesterday, and they were VERY quick to assert again that this is normal and that they could send another repairman out who would say the same thing to me. I'm wondering if indeed this is normal and if I should just shut up and go away. But I paid several hundred dollars for this appliance, and I won't have bought it if I had known it was going to make this noise, even though the noise doesn't last that long - it is frequent and sometimes wakes me up. What should I do?

Thank you for the updated. I purchased this unit in 2000. It has been making the noise (Which is loud) for about a year and a half now. So I guess we will just let it go until it quits and buy a new one then.

My ref is also a Kenmore that started banging when the compressor stops about 6 months back. At that time the ref was about 7 years old. It has seemed to get gradually louder over time. I pulled the back cover off thinking a motor mount issue, but did not see any outward signs of anything loose. Also put a wrench on all the hold down bolts/nuts that I could get to and they were tight. Plus tapped the compressor unit with hand enough to shake it some and got the same noise. I had guessed that the noise was a sign that the compressor was going out.

Hello, I have a GE Profile Refrigerator that's almost 15 years old, and it's been making a loud thump or thud noise when it shuts off. This has been happening for at least a year and as the months go by it gets louder. My suspicion has been the compressor because it seems like the only possible source of such a heavy thud. Just wanted to say I appreciate your post. Now I can plan the repair.

Some popping noise is normal but if it is banging when it stops it needs a new compressor.what has happened is one or more motor mount is broken or weak it could run like this for months or years but it is annoying! if its warranty they have to replace it.

What is the model # of your machine???? The loud banging noise sounds like the loads were getting unbalanced. This is the most likely since i have no problems with the suspension all of a sudden not stabilizing tub properly. If the washer was moved or transported than that would make more sense to me. please provide as much info as you can. Try doing a load of 10 towels. Let me know how that does and with the model # i can help with pulling some diagnostic codes

Hi, our washing machine started making very loud banging and whining noise in the final spin cycle and the machine was shaking. We have taken off the back. The springs look ok. any suggestions?

Loud banging is usually an unbalanced load. whining noise is some times debris trapped in drain pump causing it to squeal like a fan belt on a car. Strings, threads and hoses tend to get wrapped under agitator and cause noise, too.

Boom and Bang Washing Machine

Bed sheets or comforters will often get out of balance in the spin cycle or during the rinse cycle. Throw some towels in there next time at least 5 big ones. They are engineered to take a little of this banging, it should only happen once in a while.
