I'm replacing an old electric range with a new one. The old wiring is a black, white, and green, 3 wires. The new electric range calls for black, white, red,and green, 4 wires. How do I set it up and get it to work.

As far as local codes go the wiring is pre-existing so it should be fine. but it doesn't hurt to get it looked at and installed by a licensed electrician. if the oven is hard-wired,wire to wire no plug i recommend running a new supply, if it is a three prong recepticle, its as simple as putting the ground and nuetral together on the same screw, most ovens are set up from the factory to be usable in both scenarios

im sorry , i should have elaborated more. change the four prong pigtail to a three prong and combine the ground and nuetral on the same screw on the oven conection

You should check your local codes, but the black and red are the hot wires (this is for 220V connection) the white is the neutral and the green is a ground wire. It sounds like you'll probably need to run a new supply wire to the stove receptacle so you can put in a four wire receptacle. There are ways to avoid that, but for sure the wires need to be inspected to make sure you have the right gage, and you also need to make sure the stove is wired correctly. It's worth the money to have a licensed electrician do this, if it's wrong you can start a fire!

How to hardwire a 3 wire wall to a 4 wire oven

Simply put, it won't work. New oven=white is neutral, black and red are power but not on the same "leg", and green is ground. If you use a meter, black and red should give you 208-230 or so volts. Wires from wall=White is neutral, blank is voltage (probably 120 or so volts) and bare copper is ground. The dual voltage plug can be used for either 125 or 250 volts, not both as required by the new oven. Need an new circuit pulled and wire/breaker matched to new oven power requirements.

Oven Cord and Wiring Oven for 3 Wire or 4 Wire

If you have an Electric Oven, Range, or Cooktop and need to change the style of cord that you have on the appliance or if you just need to install a cord on a new cooking appliance, you may have questions about where the wires need to go. This tip will help you to figure these questions out.

Remember to ALWAYS make sure that all power is disconnected BEFORE beginning your work!!

On the back, underneath, or on the side, of your range or oven will be a cover plate that will have the wiring connection lugs behind it. A screw or two will need to be removed to expose the connection point. Always remember to reinstall the cover after you have finished your connections.

If you have a 3 wire cord the plug will look something like this.

ebbdf0f.jpg

You will have a red wire, a white wire, and a black wire, on the other end from the plug.
The black and red wires will go on the two ends to the matching colors. The white wire will go in the center. If you have a bonding strap make sure that you jumper that from the center lug to the frame of the dryer. If you do not have a bonding strap, then make sure to make one out of #10 ga. or larger wire and a couple of crimp rings. Green wire is preferable.

The connection will look something like this.

If you have a four wire cord the plug will look like this

0acee70.jpg

Here again, you will have the red, white, and black wires. This cord will also have a green wire. This wire gets connected directly to the frame of the appliance. With this cord, you do not need the bonding strap or wire. If you are converting from a 3 wire to a 4 wire then remove the old bonding strap if there is one there.

This connection will look something like this.

26f7659.jpg

When converting from a 3 wire to a 4 wire you just REMOVE the bonding strap or wire and hook the green wire to the frame. If you are converting from a 4 wire to a 3 wire then you ADD the bonding strap or wire. It gets hooked from the center lug to the frame.

Always make sure that the outlet that you are plugging into is wired correctly also. The black and red are each 110 volt legs that have a voltage of 220 volts across them. The black and the red wires need to be wired to a double pole circuit breaker of the required amperage. The wiring needs to be large enough to support the breaker size that you use and the requirements of the appliance. For 30 amps. use 10 ga. wire, for 40 amps use 8 ga. wire and for 50 amps. use 6 ga. wire. The white or neutral wire goes to the neutral bar in the power panel and the green wire goes to the ground bar in the power panel.

By following this tip you should be able to hookup a new appliance or convert your existing appliance cord. Recheck all your connections before turning the power back on to the appliance.

if its electric its hard wired to your home power 220v black(hot 120v) white(neutral) red(hot 120v) green (ground) You should wire the new oven the same way as the old oven (Shut off power before any thing)Make all wire conections clean and tight with a wire nut. wrap each with ele tape.

Oven says: ''supply open neutral'' no buttons work what to do?

That means the range is not connected properly, or the power supply to it is not correct. The range needs the neutral (along with one of the hot leads) to supply the 120 volt portion of the voltage required to operate the control. On built in ovens, the red and black are connected to the two hot supply wires, the white to neutral, and the green or bare copper wire to ground. If your supply only has three incomming wires (older homes) then the green (or bare copper wire) and white are both connected to the neutral.

I have a jenn-air wall oven it has a red wire a black wire a white wire and a copper wire but coming out of my wall is only a red/black and copper what dose the white wire go to please help thank you

IF you nhave a 3 wire feed fronm the house for your range, you connect the red and black for the power and then use the copper wire from the wall to connect to the white and copper wires from the range. All new construction must have a 4 wire feed to a range and dryer.

Frigidaire self cleaning stove mod FEF369cgsb ser vf94422321 was originally wired direct and it shows 4 wires. Now I want to use a plug and outlet, 3 prong. How do you connect the 3 prong plug? thank you...

Vivian
the original wiring probably had a red, white, black, and green wire. It is 240 volts. The red is hot, carrying one leg of 120 volts. The black is also hot, carrying 120 volts. The white is neutral, and the green is the ground.

I am against altering this, but you can wire the red and black each to a hot leg, and wire the white and green to the bottom ground. This then introduces a ground wire to your neutral bar in the circuit panel, which is not the best way to do it, but will work.

Best to get an electrician to wire a 4 wire cable to a four prong outlet, and then use a four wire pigtail with a 4 pronged plug.

Lots of people modify it, they ground the green wire to the stove, where the wire originates, and to the box with the outlet in it where it hooks onto the plug if it is metal. Then you have a part ground. And that is assuming you have a cable with wires sticking out to wire to a plug.

Boils down to your decision. If the above isn't the case, get a four pronged outlet and wire the red and black to the top two prongs, the white to the neutral, and the green to the metal box it sits in.

3 prong outlet/4 prong plug

If you bought an electric range , it is a 220 volt range with a BIG plug and can only be used in a 220 volt outlet.
If you can plug a small appliance into that outlet then the outlet is only 110 volts and you need an electrician to run a new 220 line!!!!!!
Was the range you are replacing a gas range??? If so that runs on 110 volts like you TV and toaster and every other small appliance in your house!
If you are not sure what you are doing get a professional to help you!
Every year in the United States thousands of people die buy trying to fix the electrical in their home alone!
BEWARE 220 Volts will shock you! BUT USUALLY will kill you if you touch it!
