Question about Grundfos MQ3-45 1 HP Pressure Booster Pump

1 Answer

My pump stays on after having a shower sometimes...

I moved into a house on a rural property in January, and we live off tank water and have a Grunfos PT18 pumping all our water into the house.

The problem is, not all the time, but alot of the time my pump stays on after having a shower, the motor keeps running and restarting continuously as if it is desperately trying to pump more water through, until I go underneath my house and literally turn it off at the powerpoint, wait for a bit then turn it back on.

I am scared if I leave the motor keep going like that it will burn my pump out.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can fix this problem, or why it may be doing this, or is something causing it?

Thankyou in advance, from someone who has next to no knowledge about pumps!!

The pump will start and stop with a pressure switch that is mounted in the discharge of the pump. Sometimes pressure switches get sticky and won't shut off when they are supposed to. You can buy them at most hardware stores, the most common is a Square D, and you'll need to both connect it to the pipe and also to the power line and the pump motor.

Can you describe the pump you have? Is it used for household water or a sprinkler system? Typically a household pump will have a storage tank and a pressure switch. 90% of the problems with a pump not turning off is due to the pressure switch.

Where can I get the wiring diagram for the Laing Autocirc? I want to wire in a momentary switch so that when I am ready to get in the shower I hit the switch and the pump runs until the water is warm and...

If you have the same Autocirc product I have, then it cannot be taken apart. The timer seems to be connected and sealed together with the pump. If yours is different, answer back with the wires that you can see and we'll see if the timer can be by-passed.

With the ordinary Grunfos-type pump that is not on a timer, you can add a switch and have the pump work on demand as you describe.

And they make a product that does the specific job you describe. It's called a Demand Pump. Link above shows two different types at page bottom.

I have not tested either Demand Pump shown. They operate on-demand ... when you activate the pump, the pump quickly brings water over from the hot water heater.

So the Demand Pump has a higher volume pump than the Autocirc or Grunfos.

I question a two things about the Demand Pump. 1) How will the increased pump pressure affect local pipes, especially supply tubes under a sink. 2) How HOT does the pump get? If pump gets hot, and it is located under bathroom sink next to paper goods, then that is a hazard. Some regional building codes don't allow ceiling light bulbs in closets because the bulbs get hot and start fires when people pack their closets full.

I just bought a repo house which has a grundfos circulation pump u p 15 installed at the water heater. House built 2005 4260 sq. Feet. House has 4 showers only one of them gets hot water. All sinks get hot...

that pump is likely to be a hot water return pump not a booster pump. it sound like a large property so its likely the hot water system requires balancing to get the hot water to the extreme areas. If all the hot outlets have some form of isolation valve try closing all but the affected areas and see if hot water comes out. If so only open the closed outlets enough to give you reasonable flow. This hopefully will force the hot water to the affected areas.

Problems getting hot water to the shower

If you have good water pressure to every other hot water faucet inj the house then the problem lies in the shower valves. There are some very small passages in the valve and getting dirt removed can be very hard to do. You could try trurning the water off and blowing air back through the shower or taking apart the valve and flushing the valve out with it dissasembled.
But my opinion is that the problem is in the valve.

Cleaning tank on Saniflo/Sanibest

We have a maserator in en-suite which serves the toilet & shower, We moved in to house 6 years ago and it was already here. After having guests stay a couple of months ago the maserator hasnt worked properly. When we flush the toilet, the water rises and whilst the cistern is filling with water, there is a humming noise for a couple of minutes, then the water rushes back down and there is a clonk and the water bubbles back up through the shower plug hole.Any suggestions as to what this problem is & how to fix it please?

Cold water suply filling up header tank in loft thru hot water suply on shower.

hi did you run a seperate cold water supply from the storage tank to the shower pump & also a seperate hot supply from the hot water cylinder, it sounds as though the cold water is crossing into the hot service & pushing its way up to the tank as its the only way it can go, sounds as though the cold water connection to the shower is not tank fed & possibly directly off the water main.?

Hi davecross,

I'm Harvey, the Master Plumber.

Your question is:
water pressure not great would a external pump help. Depends on your situation. If you live in a house with a well pump then turn up the pressure. If you have city water and the pressure is lacking then either install a house pump after the meter or if it is just the shower you're worried about then a booster pump on the shower line is the ticket. Be aware that useing the booster may reduce the pressure at the other faucets in the house while it's being used. The house pump will not exhibit this. You will likely need a local pro to help you with installation. Feel free contact me again!
