Hums when turned on-won't turn over

My dryer was working well, but when I went to turn it on it just made a humming noise and wouldn't turn over. Do you know what it might be?

It could be the motor, or the blower wheel may have a sock in it, if it is making a humming noise then the motor is seized up so check to see if the drum turns freely, if not you have a bad motor. only if what you said is right about a humming noise, usually it will hum and then time out.

Some dryers have a belt tension idler and switch combination that works to keep the belt under tension and shuts down the dryer if the belt breaks or falls off.

GE electric dryer not working

Hi,
It sounds like your motor is failing. You went to turn it on and it hummed... The motor got hot and triggered the safety shut off. When it cools you may be able to get it to hum again. But you will need to replace the motor.
Let me know if I can help you further.

Turn on it only hums

A humming sound means the motor is broken and not able to turn, OR there is a mechanical issue on the dryer that doesn't allow it to turn.

If the appliance is more than 3 years old, it's time to replace the motor. This is not an easy task, so a technician needs to be called.

If the appliance had a grinding noise or any other noise before it stopped working, perhaps it's time to buy a new one.

Look for foreign objects that may be jamming the drum.

Good luck.

Drum not turning, hear humming noise

the humming noise is from the motor, see if you can spin the drum by hand,if it moves you have a bad motor,if it's hard to turn you could have something stuck in the blower wheel or the belt is jammed somewhere, the blower wheel is behind the duct that the lint filter slides into

Sounds like the motor has seized. Try manually turning the drum with your hands. Is it hard to turn? If it is then the motor has seized up. If not, the windings in the motor may have shorted. Hopefully this answers your questions
