Question about Mtd 22" Yard Machine Push Mower
My lawnmower starts without difficulty but will not stay running . I have replaced the gas and added additive to the gas container and there is plenty of oil present.
I have a similar model. I'm not sure if yours is the same cheap chinese made hunk of quick rusting metal that mine is, but if it is I've had the same problem for a couple of years.
The only way I found to fix this is, every time I want to start it, empty the gas tank into a container and then take the float bowl off. You'll want a 10mm box end wrench to remove the bottom bolt from the float bowl. When you take it off, you should see lots of rust caked in the bottom of the bowl. Brush and rub that off with something smooth and hard (like the end of the wrench), after spraying with WD40 or similar spray lube.
Then spray the float itself, and you will see a small pin the float should be actuating (moving it up and down). Spray this pin, then gently tug on the float (down), and then release the float and gently push up on the pin itself. Once you get the pin to move, while pushing and pulling it and spraying it down with WD40, keep moving it until the pin automatically goes all the way up and shuts off the fuel flow, and the float smoothly comes all the way down. Then spray everything down really well with the WD40 and put it back together and put the fuel back in the tank.
It should run normally now, and any difficulties left should iron themselves out. At least until you sit it in the garage for a week and go out there to mow again, I have to repeat these steps every week and a half. One thing that seems to help is running the mower dry of gas every time before parking it in the garage, unless you'll be using it the next day or sometime very soon.
You might want to consider changing it over to use propane too, there are kits for sale on ebay that are supposed to do that really easily.
